No. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall Germany has been saddled with the bill for Reunification. Unemployment has been high and the current crunch has hit hard. German influence within the EU has also been undermined by the current instability within the German government.

I don't think so. I think the French have the dominant role in current European affairs. Nicolas Sarkozy has essentially put France back on top in Europe.
