Great classic novels?
Besides "War and Peace", what are some other books that are considered to be classics and why?
I would like to start reading again, but I want to read some decent books.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Classics and Modern Classics are books that stand the test of time, and remain popular despite being decades old. They either are popular when they are released or become popular during later generations; however, they must be popular during a time period other than the one they are written in. Modern Classics tend to be 2 to 5 decades old (though I've seen both 1 decade and 6 decades be classified as modern classic), and are distinct from the classics because they carry newer themes and have not held the test of time quite as long. Thus the reason why any book is a classic is because it is timeless.
Some classics/modern classics
Dracula by Bram Stoker
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Animal Farm by George Orwell
Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
The Invisible Man by HG Wells
Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
V for Vendetta by Alan Moore (a modern classic graphic novel it's a good read along with George Orwell's 1984)
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Hound of Baskerville by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
My Antonia by Willa Cather
Stewart Little by E. B. White
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austin
Nancy Drew and the Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene
Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Anne of Green Gables L.M. Montgomery
Little House on the Prairie Laura Ingalls Wilder
Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis
Hobbit by TRR Tolkien

"Sense and Sensibility" by Jane Austen. It's not as famous as "Pride and Prejudice," but I think it's just as good, if not better.
"Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott. It's such a sweet book!
"The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It's a little dry, and very slow, but it is a "classic"... and it is good.
"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This is a classic America novel. It's short, easy to read, and one of my personal favorites.
"The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger. See above.
I hope these help!

Start with "Vicar of the Wakefield"! Go on to a few of Charles Dickens, and Thomas Hardy:: LloydBDouglas for Biblical books! By then, you would be on track for real classics of which there are quite a few in my "short" list! Happy reading!
