My tomatoes are lacking calcium - can I shove some calcium tablets in the soil to alleviate the problem?
The soil is pretty sandy (loam) and the crop is just terrible and I read in YAHOO ANSWERS that it is almost certainly a lack of calcium in the soil. I take calcium tablets for osteoporosis, they are very high in potency.

In sandy soil you need to add organic matter . It will hold both water and nutrients longer and you will see a much better crop. How are you sure that calcium is needed?Limestone is a very cheap and easy method to add calcium to the soil.Just sprinkle it around the plant , work it into the top few inches of soil and add water. It will also change the Ph level . I would suggest that you start a compost pile and add yard and garden waste to it all year long.Next spring you will have good compost to add to the sandy soil and you will be pleased with the results. Also this fall plant a cover crop of either Rye , Buckwheat, or Peas. Till the cover crop into the soil next spring and that will help add organic matter to your soil.I am not sure there is much you can do about this years poor crop. The question I have is do you have lots of plant and very few tomatoes or are the plants sickly looking? If you have great looking plant and no fruit than the issue is too much nitrogen . Adding Phosphorous and Potash will help as these nutrients are needed for root growth and fruit production. A balanced comercial fertilizer will help sick looking plants . 5-10-10 or 10-20-20 applied at 1 tablespoon per plant. You can use other sources for plant nutrition. Fish fertilizer comes in a concentrated liquid form and when deluted with water per label dirrections will offer quick results. If you want to maintain an organic garden, get a bag of composted steer manure and work that into the soil around the base of the plant in the top 2" of soil. Be careful about working to deep as you could damage the roots of your plants. Also make sure you water often and soak the soil. I am guessing that you may be experiencing some of the extreme heat that has affected Australia this summer

I always add lime to my garden, what I use is calcium carbonate so it also adds calcium to my soil. You may need a lot of calcium tablets to do the same thing. Also when I transplant my tomatoes in the garden, I also add 2 tablespoons of a slow release fertilizer (14-14-14) and a handful of lime and it works well for me.
P.S. You may also take your soil to your county's extension agents or master gardeners to test its PH.

Milk water would be easier for the tomatoes to absorb and will give faster results than tablets, oyster or egg shells. 1 part milk, 4 parts water.

Use ground oyster shells that you can buy at a feed store.
They are rich in calcium and are organic.
