My mother had dementia. We tried everything to keep her out of a nursing home including respite care, shifts between siblings and home health care providers. She became violent, incontinent, and refused to be bathed. The final deciding factor was she frequently escaped the house and went missing for hours or days. Dressed in several layers of clothing (which she did herself) people probably thought she was homeless and crazy. We had to have her examined for sexual assault each time the police finally found her because we didn't know what may have happened to her.
Placing my mother in a nursing home was our best option for her care and safety. It was a difficult decision, but it was the best thing for her.

Yeah I (22) just had to put my mother (57) in a hospice, which is similar to a nursing home but for people with terminal illnesses.

My wife and her sister had to put their mother in an assisted care facility because she could still get around and take care of herself, however she was at the point where she needed some assistance.
A nursing home is for someone who is unable to take care of them self.
