    Well first, calm down.

    Don't go off half-******.

    It'll be okay.

Next, you didn't mention if it was or is or had been raining where you are.

If so, it's probably a roof leak.

    If it hasn't,

It could be a leaking water pipe or drain pipe or condensation...

Is there a bathroom or kitchen over the garage?

    Could be leaking from there.

Shut the circuit breaker off to the light until hubby can take a look at it.

You can e-mail me if you need more help.

    Edit-

    oops!

    That's not a bad word!

Not in the sense I used it!

    Oh well...

    Edit 2-

Go to the front of the house and look where the wires come in from the telephone pole.

These will lead you to your circuit box.

It really depends what's over your garage.

If the next thing up is open sky, then it sounds like a simple leaky roof. If it's a second story with rooms, (and specifically, a washroom or kitchen), then perhaps somebody spilled a lot of water on the floor, or left the shower screen open or something, and the water is just working its way down. A bigger problem would be a leaking pipe, (and that sucks, because then you are looking for a plumber.)

Anyway, just turn the light off for now. The power will stop at the switch and the wires leading to the light fixture will go dead. If the light is activated with a pull-cord hanging from the fixture, then that's a bit different, because it means that the electricity runs right up to the light fixture even when it's turned off, so it would be a good idea to pull the fuse or throw the circuit breaker for the garage. Even if somehow you do get zapped, 120 Volts wall power will give you a jolt, but it won't kill you. (I know this from experience!)

First take a deep breath and relax. Next try to turn off power to the light. You can flip the switch on the wall but it would be better to turn the breaker or fuse off at the main box. After that try to determint the cause of the leak. If you do not think you have the necesarry skills call a roofer to evaluate the roof. If you inspect yourself remember the leak can be away from where the cooresponding light fixture is. Also call the electrician to inspect the junction box and light fixture for any problems. Lastly remember to breath! Just make sure to power off the light!

Turn off the breaker for that circuit. Fix the roof. Wait a few days until its completely dry, turn on the breaker and then try the light. You may want to call a handyman who does small electrical jobs. Cheaper than an electrician.

We had a similar situation. Fixed the leak from the upstairs bathroom going to our kitchen overhead light fixture, waited a few days and the ceiling dried out. The light works fine... Good luck

You have a roof leak. You must live where the snow is now melting. Turn off the breaker that supplies power to that light but make sure you don't turn off the power to a freezer or fridge. Go into the attic now with af flashlight and find the leak while it is still showing itself. Ma be somewhere above ( up hill ) on the roof and running down to the light via the wire or just dripping on it. Better find it now though. Good luck and turn off that power first.

Leak in roof, You will have to go into attic and hopefully find where the leak is, this will make it much easier to fix if you can find approx. site of leak. Sometimes it is just nail head that has protruded through shingles and some roof cement will do the job...For the night I would try to find breaker for the light in garage and turn it off until you have a chance to fix the leak...

Find the circuit breaker/fuse for the garage and cut off the juice to that circuit. When it is daylight, get on a stepladder and look for where the water is coming in. Probably the roof, then it follows downward along a board. As you correctly surmised, it's potentially dangerous and must be remedied asap.

You need to call an electrician ASAP, and if possible shut off that switch in the fusebox.
