New laptop...how do I get internet onto it?

My friend has bought her daughter a laptop for college. This friend is completely computer-dumb, and I know a little bit about computers, so I am trying to help her with all of this.

With a new laptop with a wireless card in it, how do I hook them up to the internet? They already have internet through a company called Suddenlink connected to their desktop.

Do I need to buy a wireless router, like linksys or something?

If possible, please dumb the process down for me...I know some about computers, but not a lot.

To use wireless internet you have to have a wireless signal. A wireless router does that. It must match your type of internet connection that suddenlink provides. ie: DSL or CABLE. Never used suddenlink not sure. The wireless Router puts out a signal know as SSID this is setup by configuring the router, you give it a name ie: MYWIRELESS, on your laptop you view wireless connections availible by right clicking the the wireless computer ion in the system tray in the right lower corner of your desktop and you will see MYWIRELESS. You setup a profile on the laptop that connects to MYWIRELESS and inputs the security code you set up when configuring the router. The Profile setup is nomally a tab on the view connections availible or the program that drives the laptops wireless card in Programs

In order for her to use the laptop anywhere in the house and be connected to the internet wirelessly (a.k.a. without running network wires all over the house) you need a router.

A good router can connect the normal desktop pc via hard wire (a phisical connection via the ethernet cable on the back of the router and of the PC) and wireless.

Linksys make awesome routers (www.linksys.com) and they are pretty easy to use.

Once you connect one to the internet modem given to you by your provider, you will need to set up the wireless network (which is explained beautifully on the linksys website, support pages).

Once your new wireless network is up and running, all you need to do is to connect the laptop and she will be able to roam around the whole house and be wirelessly connected to the internet.
