Period and breast feeding question!?

I just started my period yesterday and I'm 7 months post partum. I've begun introducing solid foods yet still nursing/pumping 4-6 times a day. I've noticed a drop in my milk supply (1-2 ounces TOTAL from BOTH breasts!!) when I pump when I would be getting about 2 or 3 from each side! Is this normal to have a drop in your milk supply when your period begins?

    It is very normal.

I breast my daughter til she was a year and a few months and was very successful. But I specifically remember having a "shortage" for a brief moment. I tried to drink tea called mothers milk, which was formulated and safe to increase milk supply.... Now, did that work? well i am not too sure, but point is, my milk came back full force.

Also, you produce MUCH more milk in the early months because that is your child's primary source of nutrition, and as time goes on your body make certain adjustments too. Almost like it knows that you don't need "as much"

Either way, do not stress and that never helps and just follow the rhythm of your body.

    Good Luck and many congratulations!!!

I just went through the same thing. i got my first period back last month (I'm breastfeeding too) and I was a week late. I also ran to the store to buy a pregnancy test which was negative and got myself all worked up for nothing. Breastfeeding throws your cycle out of whack and it probably won't go back to being regular until you have weaned or cut way back on feedings. I had 21 day cycles like clockwork before my baby and this time I was over 30 days. Who knows if we are even ovulating. However, if you aren't ready for another one, you might want to look into more reliable birth control (an IUD maybe?) I know I for one could never rely on condoms...they just break way to easily for me :)

Yes. It's normal for baby not to want to nurse as often to, since periods change the flavour a bit. After your period is over things should taste normal again and your supply will most likely return to normal after a few days.

Absolutely, now that you started your menstrual cycle again your body is going through some changes. As time goes by you wont have the milk supply that you had when your child was born.

Everything is okay, but if you have any concerns ask your doctor.

It could be that since your baby is eating more solids, He is just drinking less milk? Therefore your not making as much. I didn't get my period until I stopped nursing so I really don't know. My daughter never really cared for baby food so it never replaced any nursing.

Your period has nothing to do with it. When you start solids the baby drinks less and the demand of milk goes down. You usually produce just enough for baby.

Yes, your hormone levels are changing. And your baby isn't drinking as much milk now, your body replaces what is used.

If you pump after your baby feeds to empty your breast, it will help your supply.

yes normal. Your supply is effected by your period. When it stops your milk supply will come back up.
