Who is your favorite screen actor(s)?
Gary Oldman is by far the best actor alive today,
BUT:
Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown turns in my two favorite performances.
What an amazing oversight - Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the most intense actors there is, and turned in magnificent performances in The Last of the Mohicans, Gangs of New York, A Room With a View, There Will Be Blood, and (even though I hate the film, his performance is strong) My Left Foot.
Re. Edward Norton: I don't believe he ever lived up to his early promise a la Primal Fear and American History: X. The rest I can agree with (especially Philip Seymour Hoffmann), except for Natalie Portman - I've seen all of her films and haven't seen much more than a glimmer of talent.

Daniel Day Lewis is incomparably the most skillful and evocative male actor in recent history.
Cate Blanchett is unequivocally phenomenal.
Then there's also the likes of Edward Norton, Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Natalie Portman, Dustin Hoffman, et cetera.
I think Edward Norton is a remarkable talent, however, I do agree, recently his role-selection has lacked noticeable grandeur. Great films and performances in Primal Fear, The People vs. Larry Flynt, American History X, Fight Club. Edward Norton should be exclusive to profound, thought-compelling films. He has an aura of intensity and sophistication that should be supplemented with cohesive roles. There's a subtly in his eyes that's wasted on simplicity. Complexity is where Edward Norton reigns true.
As for Natalie Portman, I love her. I think she's very intriguing as a performer. I appreciate the films she selects, as she tends to participate in more unique movies. She perfectly captured the innocence and eccentricity of Garden State. Oh, and, I remember this one scene in The Other Boleyn Girl... (which, was a horrendous film; it was plagued with historical inaccuracies and was altered so significantly from the book that it was virtually unrecognizable. Anyway, the scene)... the execution of Anne Boleyn towards the end of the film... Natalie Portman begins crying as she removes her headdress to prepare for the decapitation... the pure emotion exerted in that scene was just such a moving embodiment of history.
Speaking of the others, I'm surprised Leonardo DiCaprio wasn't nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Revolutionary Road.
The films and performances this year have been so great... Milk, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Doubt, Frost/Nixon, et cetera... they all deserve an award. It almost seems like thievery not to properly validate every single one of these films.
