Where to live in (northern) Florida?
My husband and I are looking to move to Florida. We will have graduated college and have bachelor's degrees. We will want to live somewhere with plenty of jobs (not just your part-time retail) but not be too expensive to live. It probably won't be for another year or so but we are looking into it early. Does anyone know where would be a good place for people like us? We would prefer somewhere in the middle of the state, not real close to a coast because of hurricanes (yes I know, they affect even the center of the state) but would want to live in an apartment for a while, most likely. Any ideas of towns that would have a good job market, be decently safe (not super high crime rates..) and not just a 'party' college town, would be great. Thanks!!!

Priscilla has said it rather well, and I agree with her suggestions. I live in Volusia County, but would not recommend it due to high unemployment, and in and around Daytona many transients. The best chance of finding employment inland would be Orlando, but that is not the least expensive. It is a high rent area. I also like St. Augustine,
and Cocoa Beach on the East Coast and Venice or Sarasota on the West Coast, but those are beach areas which you prefer to avoid.

If you are worried about hurricanes, statistically, northeast Florida (Jacksonville, Amelia Island) is a pretty good place to be. (Of course, only one named storm, Fay, even touched Florida in 2008.)
All of Florida has been affected by the financial meltdown, but northern Florida is better off than the southwest peninsula (Naples), which is pretty much Ground Zero for the housing bubble.
We're on Amelia Island and love it, but if you really want to be more inland, I wonder if Gainesville might suit you, it would probably be quite affordable.
The job market might be okay on the northwest side as well, Ft Walton Beach, Niceville, Navarre--but it is more likely to get hit with storms.

Go for Jacksonville, FL. You'll love it there!
