What are the steps to becoming a Sheriff patrol officer or a city police officer in TX?

I am actually curious about exactly what certifications I need and how to obtain them as well as all the other steps involved in achieving my goal. I am looking to be an officer in a smaller town or county where a bachelors degree is not necessary like the DPS requires. If you have the information I would really appreciate your help.

The easiest way to go about this is to go to an academy. The Ft. Bend Co.. Sheriffs Dept. has a good academy called the Gus George Academy. Also most Jr. Colleges have a police certification course. Check into to this and make your decision.

Most smaller towns want you to be TCLOSE certified before they hire you. Most larger towns hire first and send you to an academy so you can take the TCLOSE test.

So, likely in your case you need to find an academy to go to. Check with your local community college. it of course depends on where you live. Around populated areas like Austin Dallas and Houston there are lots of academies, usually run by a local community college district. In west Texas your going to have to look around.

After you pass out of the academy you are allowed to take the TCLOSE. you pass and you can be commissioned by a local department.

I suggest you check with any that are hiring that you would qualify for and see if they will sponsor you to an academy. Most big cities only require 60 semester hours (AA equivalent) or military service not a bachelors.

Leslie S and ricochet provided great answers. You should probably send yourself to an academy. Even though you may not need a four year degree, you should consider earning one. The more college you have, the better! Visit http://www.tcleose.state.tx.us/public%20notice/aca... for a list of TCLEOSE licensed academies. There are many things to consider when thinking about becoming a police officer. Check out http://www.peaceofficerjobs.com/ for excellent information and advice about becoming a police officer. Good luck!

First you need to practice beating up asians and white people driving Honda and Acura cars on beltway 8. Then you have to get good at accusing people at starbucks of being in a gang because they have the wrong shirt and they are up at 3am.

Source(s): I was beat up by the sheriff on Louetta road for racing and again at starbucks because they "knew" me and my friends were in a gang.
