p.s. whoever said lets tip the mailman, i give my mail lady christmas gifts, she is the best, when ever i get a package she calls me and will reroute herself back to me whenever i get home to deliver it, would your mail person do this? no they would leave a note saying you missed your package, as far as police, they get tipped by free food at almost every place out there just F.Y.I im guessing store clerks people think thye make good hourly pay, subway doesn't really tip but have a tip jar in front of register. waitress's and delivery people make there living off of tips and usually get paid little for there hours- maybe 2-3 bucks a hour, so always tip them. I'v helped deliver groceries in my younger days to customers cars and got a tip.

Who tips at Subway?
It's customary to tip at any place where the person provides a service directly to you... for example, waiters, mechanics, cab drivers, etc. This is so their income can be based on the quality of the service provided. If you're working at a cash register, the most they can up their quality of service is by being nice, not by putting in extra work.
Plus, waiters are usually paid way below minimum wage because tips are factored into their income (unless you live in Cali).

The ones you mentioned were food service places. Most food places have tip jars like that because they have to actually make you something. Neither a convenience store clerk or a grocery clerk doesn't prepare food for you like most places do.

Many yrs. ago a family member held a convienence store clerk job and she did get tips from regular customers when they won a good amount in the lottery-so it does happen occasionally.

I think all these businesses need to pay their employees rather than rely on the consumer to pay over inflated prices as well as supplement an hourly wage. Tipping should be confined to the food service industry only, as most food servers make less than half the federal minimum hourly wage rate.

Tips r given to people, such as waitresses, because they have to pick up the tab. They have to pay somewhat for the food that u buy and u tip them so they don't have that burden ... and to be generous. Clerks r at ur connivance, not at ur service like the others u mentioned!

because they actually do something not just ring in your purchases you have to go get them but in your logic why don't we tip lawyers they make legal cases that keep you out of jail and why not tip contractors they build your house maybe we should all get away from the idea of tipping

Because standing around just ringing up a sale at a cash register does not deserve a tip.
