I was given an offer to take over our gym.?

The master of our gym just got transferred to another state, he is currently instructing in Tae Kwon Do, he ask if I was interested in taking over the gym.

I know I'll have to bring in another master for testing and have access to 4 masters that can do the testing (they are too far away to take over the gym).

Currently the gym covers all its rent, supplies etc, with some left over, no much, the current master did it more to keep in shape and teach than make a profit.

Currently, I know there is no liability insurance only a hold harmless document that students or their guardians are required to sign.

So those of you that instruct what questions do I need to ask and what do I need to look out for.

My other option would be to complete the training of the current higher ranked students (on the side) to black belt and close the school. If I take that route at what rank should we cut it off, a year to complete six months or what?

Thanks in advance.

Update:

One other option is to try and hook up with the local health center and run the class through them as an employee of teh gym.

The last questions you asked should be your last concern at this point. I can tell you from experience having taken over martial arts schools before. First you are sure to lose some of the students that are currently training. If that is going to break the budget, then you are surely in over your head before you even begin. Bringing in any new instructor is going to be liked by some students and hated by others. Liability insurance is something you absolutely must get if you are to continue. Hold harmless agreements will not stand up in court. Sounds like unless you personally have a lot of money to back this dojo until it can get back to normal, you are in over your head.

Bottom line is that Insurance even for a group of 1-10 students will cost you $500 a year, paid up front. Then you still have to find a qualified instructor. Be careful of large organizations, some will suck you dry with dojo fees, testing fees, instructor certifications and instructors licenses. These are paid on a yearly basis. Some organization will send someone to conduct testing. But it will cost you a lot. Others will require those testing to travel to some out of town or out of state location to test. Any way to go taking over the school will likely do the instructor leaving more good than it will you. It simply will take a lot of money to keep the dojo going. I don't mean to make it sound bleak. It is just I've seen others in the same situation get into deep financial trouble taking over a dojo. Just remember if the school is barely paying the bills now who is going to pay the bills until you can get enough new students to replace the ones that leave. I can also tell you from experience that asking the students if they will stay is not worth the time. No matter what they tell you some will quit anyway, and you will be the one paying the bills.

If you cut it off you will lose money. The school will be closed. so I would only do that if you can financially.

Its not fair to the current students who are close to getting a black belt too.

As for who to promote, I would only promote the red belts to black that have the skills enough to be a black belt and also have the discipline.
