How many gigabytes do i need to make my computer fast but not slow?
My computer holds up to 38.1 gigabytes.
Right now i have 10.6 gigabytes.
My free space is 27.5 gigabytes.
My computer now is going slow.
Is 10.6 gigabytes good for my computer to make it average or i need to take away gigabytes to make it average.
Then if im wrong then where can i find how much ram space and how much i have in my computer.

Hi David,
The fastest, cheapest way to speed up a computer is to add memory. Check and see how much memory you have, and if it is below 512mb then your computer could probably handle more. Maxing a computers memory these days is pretty cheap and well worth it.
I understand your frustration with a computer that just continually gets slower each day but this happens with all computers. What you need is a weekly, monthly or bi-monthly maintenance schedule to follow in order to keep your computer in tip top shape.
1. Backup those important files.
2. Add more Memory to your computer.
3. Optimize Settings for best performance.
4. Increase Pagefile
5. Remove startup application not needed.
6. Uninstall unused programs.
7. Update Windows.
8. Install a Firewall program.
9. Perform a Disk cleanup.
10. Anti-Virus Scan.
11. Spyware scan.
12. Malware scan.
13. Run Scandisk.
14. Defragment your hard drive.
15. Check your computer for Overheating.

This really would not have a bearing on the speed of your machine. Sure if your hdd is almost completely full you will see a longer search time, etc. however this is not the issue in your case. You most likely have an older pc. I suggest upgrading to a new machine with a newer processor and more ram. This will certainly be much faster. If your machine is new and you have a good processor and decent amount of ram, you may have a virus or trojan causing your system to run slowly. (however i dont think any new machine would have a 38 gb hdd)

You are talking about hard drive space which does not effect computer speed. What you need to look at is your RAM. HD only holds the information. RAM determines how fast your computer can process the information. More HD space = can hold more stuff. More RAM = how many and how fast applications are processed.

You are on the wrong track there.
It is a common (and completely pointless) myth that using your PC to store data can slow it down.

The amount of Free space you have on your computer has no effect whatsoever on the speed of your computer.
