  • Why can't linux run dos programs?

So, what I would like to know is why can't DOS programs be run under linux?

I understand that Windows executables rely on libraries and things like that, but I was wondering if there is a fundamental reason that DOS EXEs can't be run.

    Thanks

  • How to make ssh window appear on remote computer?

I'm not sure this is possible or not. I tried just a normal search, but I don't quite know how to phrase it to get useful results.

I want to use SSH and I want the commands I type to appear on screen on the remote computer. Is there a way to do this?

A friend of mine is just starting to get into Linux and I have the ability to ssh in and do things for him, but I want him to be able to see what I am doing.

Is SSH capable of this or is there another program that we can use?

I hope I've explained myself well enough.

  • what is a good price for commodore 64 with accessories?

I have a commodore 64 with a bunch of accessories that I've had around for ever.

I'm thinking about selling it all on ebay but I'm not sure what would be a good price?

I have a commodore 64, a 1541 disk drive, and a datasette drive. I have the power cables for everything, as well as cables to connect it all, and the switch to hook it to a TV. it all worked last time I tested it, approximately 3 years ago. I also have 1 game cartridge(Sea Wolf), 1 game on floppy disk(Zork 3), 1 game cassette, (Transformers) an epyx fast load cartridge, 2 joysticks and a set of paddles.

Like I said, I'm looking to sell this stuff on ebay, or where ever, and I want to know what a reasonable price would be. I know it's old and probably not worth a whole lot, but I also know that some old stuff can go for quite a lot. Any information you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks

  • How do I change these fuses?

There are four fuses in my fusebox that have some kind of black plastic thing around them, which prevents me from taking them out. One of the fuses is blown so I need to change it. I just can't see any way to get the black plastic thing off. Any help is appreciated.

  • How to get your employer to purchase tools for you?

I work as a technician for a company that does installations and repairs. Recently, I've found a certain tool that would make my job a lot easier. It's not really expensive (about $100) but it is more than I, personally, can afford to spend. I've been trying to think of a way to ask my boss to buy one for me, but I don't like the sound of anything I've been able to come up with.

I'd like to hear your suggestions.

A few other notes, I will probably emailing the request to my boss. I'm the newest employee and most of the other technicians have one, I do not know if the company purchased them, or if they all purchased their own.

    Thanks for your help

  • What can you tell me about Tanmcgar(??), ireland?

When I was a kid my parents always used to tell me that my ancestry was irish and that our family had once lived in "TanMcGar," Ireland, apparently in County Armagh. The only reason I remember is because of the rhyme "TanMcGar, County Armar."

I can't find anything online about it, but I don't know the spelling, or anything else about it except the general sound of the name. So any help you can provide, even to just point me in the right direction, would be greatly appreciated.

  • RF Power vs Distance?

I was wondering if there is a guideline for figuring out the distance covered by a certain amount of RF power? I'm talking about VHF and UHF frequencies, as used by 2 way radios.

I know there are a lot of factors that affect it, I'm just looking for a general guideline.

For example, If I have a 25 Watt transmitter, would a receiver 25 Km away be able to pick up the signal?

  • Better to have more ram, or faster ram?

I recently picked up a stick of ram and put it in my computer. I got it free so, why not?

Before I added the new stick I had

    512Mb running at 400Mhz

with the new stick I have

    768Mb running at 266MHz

My Question is: I am better off with or without the extra stick?

As a note, I've been running for about a week with the extra stick, and haven't really noticed any change.

  • Why does int 16h in my assembly language program cause a crash?

I'm trying to learn Assembly language, and I'm trying to do one of the examples in the book.

It compiles fine, but when ever I try to run my program it crashes. When I debug the program it says

'Unhandled exception in temp.exe;0xC0000005;Access Violation' and tells me that the line

    int 16h

is what is causing the crash. The book tells me specifially to use this command, so I can't change it to something else. So does anyone know what I can do?

I'm using Windows XP with SP3. I've got an Intel Celeron processor.

    Here's my code:

    mov bx, 0

    cmp bx, 80

    jz done1

    mov ah, 0

    int 16h

    mov myvar[2], al

    inc bx

    cmp al, 0dh

    jz done2

    done1: mov myvar, 0dh

    done2: mov bx, 0

    myloop: cmp myvar[bx], 0dh

    jz done3

    mov ah, 03

    mov al, myvar[bx]

    int 10h

    inc bx

    ;jmp myloop

    done3: exit

  • How to get dual monitor setup working?

I'm trying to get my XP computer to work with dual monitors, but I'm having problems.

No matter what I do, I can't get my AGP card working.

Anytime I try to go to the Settings tab, in display properties it tells me that 'The driver I'm using was written for a previous version and is no longer compatible.' Device manager shows no issues however.

Now, if I remove the PCI card, the AGP card works beautifully. When I download and try to install the latest driver, it tells me 'no compatible hardware found'

If I remove, one of the cards, reboot, and then put the card back in, it will work until the next time I reboot.

I've tried the PCI card in both slot 0 and slot 1. I've tried changing whether PCI or AGP is the default in the BIOS.

I also have another computer that has a dual monitor setup using one PCI card ad one AGP, so it's not that.

    Any ideas?

  • How to display more search results in aMule?

I'm using aMule(not sure what version, but I just installed it yesterday using apt-get) and no matter what I search for it will only display about 150 results. Using Emule on my windows box, I can get upwards of 500 results, but using aMule, I can't get anymore than 150.

Is there anything I can do to display more results?

  • What's the point of the little ball on the end of antennas?

What's the point of the little ball on the end of the antenna. I'm not talking about the little decorative things people use to find their cars in parking lot, I'm talking about the little balls that are quite often on the very end of an antenna. They're part of the actual antenna, but I'm not sure what purpose they serve.
