How to get your employer to purchase tools for you?

I work as a technician for a company that does installations and repairs. Recently, I've found a certain tool that would make my job a lot easier. It's not really expensive (about $100) but it is more than I, personally, can afford to spend. I've been trying to think of a way to ask my boss to buy one for me, but I don't like the sound of anything I've been able to come up with.

I'd like to hear your suggestions.

A few other notes, I will probably emailing the request to my boss. I'm the newest employee and most of the other technicians have one, I do not know if the company purchased them, or if they all purchased their own.

Thanks for your help

Do not e-mail your boss. A face to face meeting is always best in this case.

Go to Google or Yahoo search and find an article about this particular tool. Show the boss the written advantages of this tool.

You need to show your boss why spending $100 for a tool will benefit the employer.

You may have to speak to the other technicians to find out if the company purchased it for them.

You need as much information as you can. If all the other employees bought the tool themselves then you may be out of luck. But, if the other employees purchased it themselves maybe they can show you where you can get it for less than the $100.
