Goodman heat pump problems again.....read on..?

It is possible you need a new compressor, but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. It could be just a defective run capacitor which is a pretty common problem and is a lot less expensive than a compressor or a new unit. Now, it is possible the compressor is going and caused the cap. to fail, but if the cap. is bad, replacing it may buy you some time and keep it running for a while. I would call a heating co. to check it out.

The compressor is probably grounded. It isususally more beneficial to replace the condensing unit because the warranty of a replacement compressor is one year; if you get a new condensing unit the warranty is at least five depending on the unit. I also take offense to the answer that an A/C co. will try to sell you a new system anyway, most of us are honest businessmen and the few hacks out there give all of us a bad rep. By the way, a capacitor will not cause the breaker to trip.

You should not replace just the compressor, yes you would be throwing good money after bad. If I were you I would replace the complete condensing unit. With new technoligies the energy savings will help pay back for the cost of the new system.
