I was asked this question: Have you ever seen a man evolve from a monkey?

by a christian. What would your response be to such an (absurd) question?

Update:

Thanks for your responses so far. I held off saying what my response was, to get an unbiased opinion.

I explained in simple terms that that never happens, but that at some point a "monkey" gave birth to a human. Obviously it's more complex than that...

This was actually a personal friend, and I tolerate the times she makes statements like this, as she is a nice person otherwise.

I would tell them to stop thinking about evolution in terms of Pokemon games. Maybe take a biology class or two.

How did they become so ignorant? Did they miss their entire education?

Or are they non christians deliberately setting out to make christians look ignorant?!!

    Then I would explain:

Primates are mammals that include lemurs, monkeys, apes and humans.

The Strepsirrhini, or “wet-nosed” primates, which include lemurs and lorises, branched off around 63 million years ago.

Old World monkeys and apes divided from New World monkeys about 40 million years ago.

Aegyptopithecus zeuxis, which probably resembles the common ancestor of New World monkeys and apes, lived about 29 million years ago.

The apes split from Old World monkeys about 25 million years ago.

Humans and chimpanzees diverged 5-7 million years ago.

So yes on each split the original got left behind to stay as it was! But why do you think they were unlucky? I am sure that many of the "left behind" species are perfectly happy as they are and that there are a good many humans that would not mind trading places with them!!!

Of the macaque's nearly 3 billion DNA base pairs, 93.5 per cent are identical to those in the human genome. This is not unexpected for a species whose lineage diverged from our own about 25 million years ago. The human and chimp genomes, which diverged just 6 million years ago, are about 98 per cent identical.

One puzzling discovery is that several mutations that cause genetic diseases in humans - such as phenylketonuria and Sanfilippo syndrome, which lead to mental retardation - are the normal form in macaques and, presumably, our own ancestors.

Even better apes appear to be evolving faster than humans!!

233 chimp genes, compared with only 154 human ones, have been changed by selection since chimps and humans split from their common ancestor about 6 million years ago!!

Tell that person to educate themself. Evolution does not happen in a day and man did not evolve from monkeys.. We just share a common ancestor.

When somebody says they evolved from a monkey, I make a face and say "obviously".

    lol

you can never evolve now matter how hard you try. the mutation happens at birth and from generation to generation. not wall the individual is living.

another augment is evolution is just a theory. and for that i say read this website.

Awkwardly stare into space while I think of a way to change the subject. At a certain point it's just not worth it...

What? If these people think evolution means an individual changing magically, you really can't discuss it with them other than send them to learn the basics.

i would say, have you ever seen a woman turned into a pillar of salt? A man survive being swallowed by a whale? etc.

BTW, anyone who says that doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.... so until they've had a basic biology class, you'll be wasting your breath.

    "No..but I've seen a man de-evolve back INTO a monkey. Congratulations...it's you."

    In my mind's eye, yes!!

my children are monkeys, and my husband's an ape.
