A bankruptcy every 30 seconds due to health care costs?

Obama just stated that one American goes bankrupt every 30 seconds due to health care cost. That's 1,051,200 cases per year! A study by The Institute for Financial Liberties indicates 52% of bankruptcies were the result of loss of income. Of those bankruptcies, 36% percent of those were the result of injury or illness. We'll just assume all those fall in the health care category just to be fair.

However, the total estimated number of bankruptcies in 2008 were 1,086,000. That's not good by any means. These two figures do not add up. Who's lying?

I literally almost spit out my tea laughing when I heard those words come from his mouth. My 12 year old has recently become interested in politics, economy, etc. and I've been having to dispel some of the garbage she's been fed in school about it. Even she caught the stupidity of it and laughed along with me. I can only hope that many adults are able to do the same... soon.

Since when is loss of income and medical bills indpendent events?

Sounds like a skewed presentation of facts to me.

If you lose income, and have a $300,000 medical bill sitting there what are you going to do?

File bankruptcy because of loss of income and cost a medical provider $300,000. Guess what the medical provider is going to do.... Yup you guessed it raise prices on everyone who can pay and their insurance companies. guess what happens then.... YUP you guessed it again. wow you are a smart fella! The insurance companies raise your premiums.

every year 22,000 deaths in the USA are attributed to lack of health coverage and lack of access ot health care.

and BTW, with there being two 30 second periods every minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day and just say 352 days a year, that makes 1,013,760 bankruptcies every year because of medical bills according to Obama. But to be honest, I think The Institute for Financial Liberties is stating the data in a way which understates the affect of medical bills and cutting figures in half, while Obama is actually overstating it by nearly twice as much.

But medical caused bankruptcies do effect about 2 million Americans a year, so stating it in those terms, Obama is correct.

Either way, unless something is made out to be a larger than life problem, the 50% of Americans who aren't filing bankruptcy will not see it as a problem until it affects them.

With politics, you have to read between the lines, think about the underlying premise, and determine if that is correct or not, because a large part of politics is marketing.

People like to argue over the icing then ignore what flavor the cake is.

Obama's premise that medical bill induced bankruptcy is a huge problem.

It not only affects the people filing the bankruptcy but it also causes losses to the provider that passes the cost onto the rest of us and our insurance companies.

    His premise is indeed sound.

This has actually been cited by many people across the board. First of all, it is more specifically detailed here: http://www.nchc.org/facts/cost.shtml . This is from the National Coalition on Health Care, "The National Coalition on Health Care (NCHC) is the nation's largest and most broadly representative alliance working to improve America's health care." (found here: http://www.healthfinder.gov/orgs/hr2645.htm). This statistic is also on Governor Schwarzenegger's site, a Republican. And lastly, this Washington Post article further details how this is actually true: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A944...
