Has anyone living in NJ gone through the process of having a child evaluated for special ed?

I am about to start the process for the first time and would like to know what the whole process is like. They told me with will be a 3 part evaluation with a psychological workup being part and the education evaluation last. Any answers greatly appreciated.

    Hi.

I'm not new to Special Ed in NJ, and am now becoming involved with advocacy You need the work up to establish what your child's abilities might be, versus how they are currently functioning. It can be valuable when the child study team makes suggestions for your child. If their goals do not recognize the issues covered in the work up, you can ask that they do, or request an out of district placement.

A professional I contacted once called this "doing your homework",

The child study team is juggling your child, with what is actually available in district. It can lead to a lot of "square peg in round hole" suggestions. If you find out as much as you can about your child's issues and needs, you are in a much better position.

Also, look online for ASAH, located in Hamilton. They were a god send when I was in your position several years ago, and helped point me in the right direction a number of times.

Good luck...and remember...you are your child's BEST resource. If they say something that just sounds off, trust your instincts.
