My own study of the Bible has convinced me that our souls or spirits go immediately into the presence of God when we die. The Apostle Paul wrote that those of us who are Christians "would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8).

Although the Bible doesn't answer all our questions about life after death, it clearly tells us that we can look forward to heaven's joys when we die, if we know Christ. Shortly before His death and resurrection, Jesus told His disciples, "I am going there to prepare a place for you ... that you also may be where I am" (John 14:2-3). The Bible also says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

The most important truth I can tell you about heaven, however, is that we will be with God, and nothing evil or harmful will ever touch us again. In heaven, God "will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away" (Revelation 21:4). Why would anyone not want to go there?

All this is possible because Jesus Christ took upon Himself the death and judgment we deserve when He died on the cross for us. And by rising from the dead, He showed that He has conquered death and Hell and Satan forever. Is your faith and trust in Him for your salvation? If not, commit your life to Him today.

I guess I believe that the soul does come back and what kind of person you are in this life will dictate your next one. Once a person accepts this theory, they have an incentive to conduct themselves as a better human being. I don't rule out the animal kingdom as being part of this grand scheme. And the end to this journey? I have no answer but maybe there is that place the soul unites with others to actually form the entity called God.

The human does not have something inside them (soul) that is waiting to escape at the moment of death to a place of eternal torment or eternal bliss.

This belief came from the fusing of Egyptian rituals and Greek philosophy into the doctrines called "Hell Fire and Damnation","Immortality of the Human Soul" and "The Rapture". Made up by certain religious hierarchy in their effort to control the masses and force them with fear to support the system they had developed which they titled "Church".

None of these doctrines are Bible Truths.

Honestly, I believe we are in hell, here on earth, and that we are here to learn something, or accomplish something. When we have, or we run out of time in our bodies, the soul will go back to "heaven, a better place", and be determined there. If you did what you were supposed to do then you can either stay, or go back to earth to learn or accomplish something else. If your time ran out, then you have to go back and try again. I hope that's understandable...

on the other hand, MY study of the Bible leads me to think this:

Genesis says man came to BE a soul - not have a soul

it is well known that the soul that is sinning will die

and that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God

plus, Ecclesiastes says that the dead know nothing at all

so the 'soul' is not a spirit and it dies

    There is no soul.

That's a fiction made up by religions so they can hold it over your head and control you. It helps to get people to fill the pews and empty their pockets.

It's like a bad insurance scam. Pay them in money and time and help them recruit new converts, and they'll give you big rewards when you're dead. Of course, when you're dead, you're just dead.

If a soul is sinful he is taken to the court of Yamaraja (Judge of death) he awards the soul another body suitable for the sins (karma)he has commited. Otherwise if the soul is a Pure Devotee of Lord Krishna he goes back home to the spiritual world (Vaikuntaha\Goloka) to associcate face to face with Lord Krishna in His pastimes achiving eternal life full of bliss and knowledge. Yamaraja is acting as a Judge on behalf of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna being Supreme Personality of Godhead has nothing to do - his assistants do all the work for Him.

Yamaraja is judge. He has got everything recorded in his mind of a sinful man's activities in the past. So immediately he decides that "This soul should be given such and such body." So we are getting body.

One should learn from the Vedic literature that one's body is also not the property of the individual soul, but is given to the individual soul according to his karma. Karmana daiva-netrena jantur dehopapattaye. The 8,400,000 different bodily forms are machines given to the individual soul. This is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita (18.61):

    isvarah sarva-bhutanam

    hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati

    bhramayan sarva-bhutani

    yantrarudhani mayaya

"The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone's heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy." The Lord, as the Supersoul, sits in everyone's heart and observes the various desires of the individual soul. The Lord is so merciful that He gives the living entity the opportunity to enjoy varieties of desires in suitable bodies, which are nothing but machines (yantrarudhani mayaya). These machines are manufactured by the material ingredients of the external energy, and thus the living entity enjoys or suffers according to his desires. This opportunity is given by the Supersoul.

Bg 15.8 P The Yoga of the Supreme Person

At the time of death, the consciousness he has created will carry him on to the next type of body. If he has made his consciousness like that of a cat or dog, he is sure to change to a cat's or dog's body. And, if he has fixed his consciousness on godly consciousness, he will be transferred to Krsnaloka in the spiritual world and will associate with Krsna. It is a false claim that after the annihilation of this body everything is finished. The individual soul is transmigrating from one body to another, and his present body and present activities are the background of his next body. One gets a different body according to karma, and he has to quit this body in due course. It is stated here that the subtle body, which carries the conception of the next body, develops another body in the next life. This process of transmigrating from one body to another and struggling while in the body is called karsati or struggle for existence.
