Being african-american and mexican , i know exactly what you mean! My hair is also thick and curls never stayed until i tried a new technique which is straightening your hair out first with a flat iron (if you have the time and iron and some type of heat protection ) Straightening it flat will make it easier to deal with and more likely to achieve curls! Then curl your hair by 2' - 3' sectiions depending on how big you curlin iron is. Since your hair is thick when you wrap a section around the iron make sure you hold it long enough for the curl to form. Then simply spritz a little bit of hairspray and gurl u will be lookin so fly!

Do you have a good quality curling iron? If you bought it in Walmart or Target, then you probably dont. But if you do have an iron that gets hot enough, then maybe you should try roller wrap setting your hair. This is the technique/style that is done a lot in the dominican hair salons so you probably have heard about it. All you do is wash your hair and then section it and roll your hair onto rollers. Make sure they are pretty big so you dont look like a grandma when you take them out. Once all the hair is rolled up sit under a dryer until your dry then remove the rollers. Once the rollers are all out, take a paddle brush and wrap your hair around your head in a circular motion and tie in place with satin scarf or you can buy a hair net made especially for this (you can even use saran wrap) and sit back under the dryer for about 20-30 more minutes. Then comb out the wrap with a wide tooth comb. Roller wrapping can give your hair big body curls or just a simple bumped under look depending on the size rollers you use. Youtube roller wrap setting for a better explanation.

    Option #1-

Buy some curlers... you can find them anywhere- I got mine at Target. Before bed, take a shower to get your hair wet (then shampoo and condition of course) then put some curl defining mousse in your hair (I recommend Garnier Fructis Curl Construct Mousse). Put the curlers in, and in the morning put in some hairspray (I recomment Garnier Fructis Style Spray) and then take the curlers out, and spray hair more if necessary.

    Option #2

In the morning, take a shower to get your hair wet. Put in Curls Rock Curl Booster and scrunch a lot, then put in Curls Rock Curl Amplifier and scrunch some more. Then blow dry with a diffuser (this is the most important step, so don't skip, and USE A DIFFUSER! It makes your hair so much curlier).

    Option #3

In the morning, put in Tressemme Curl Shaping Spray, which is meant for use with heat tools. Spray it in, then blow dry your hair quickly with a diffuser for about a minute. Then, with a really nice curling iron (I recommend Bedhead) curl your hair in sections. Straighten the strand with the curling iron once or twice, then curl. Hold it there until you can feel heat through the hair (be careful when touching your hair- it'll be hot!), then release the clamp and pull the iron down.

Okay so that was a long answer but good luck and I hope I helped!
