Clogged Sink - Product that dissolves hair?

A while ago, our bathtub drain was severely clogged and no product like Drano would work, so we called maintenance. The guy came and used a white powder-like product that he poured a bit into the drain and turned the water on. When the water hit the powder, a reaction occurred that literally singed away and dissolved the hair; i could hear it working.

Now, we haven't had any more trouble with the tub, but my boyfriend shaved his beard off in the sink and our bathroom sink is now VERY clogged. I don't want to call maintenance again because we have pet rats (we're not allowed to have any pets) and it's difficult to hide them as we have NO storage space.

Does anyone know what product they may have used that dissolved the hair, and if i would be able to find in at home depot or similar store? Thanks in advance!

bleach won't be very effective at clearing a clogged drain. Lye (sodium hydroxide) used to be the common household drain cleaner. but there are now more effective products available. just go to your local store and spend a few bucks. there are also physical/mechanical methods to clear a clogged drain if you don't want to use chemicals.

There is a flexible plastic tool called Zipit that has barbs on it. You simply push it into the drain and pull it out slowly and it pulls out the hair. Home improvement stores carry them and it is a whole lot safer for you and your pipes. Works great for me.

If its a sink you have access to the trap and if its plastic you can easily twist off the nuts and pull the trap out and clean it out.

put a bucket under the sink when you take the trap out.

Trashy! Clogged drains, hair, rats!!!! Yuck. You obviously treat your rental like a rental. If you EVER get your own place, I would be willing to bet you will better-respect the drainage system. Putting beard shavings down a drain is stupid!

My wife has long hair that inevitably ends up in the shower drain. So, every 4-6 months, I need to remove the drain grate assembly with a wrench and physically removing the hair- Yukkkk! It is disgusting, however, using harsh acid chemicals that melt hair is bad for the environment and requires repeat treatment.

Do it yourself instead of relying on other people to fix your problems- you might learn a couple of things in the process.

    Product, Product, Product.........

    Good Luck (cleaning your stigh)
