What can I use instead of onion soup mix?
My husband is allergic to the preservatives in onion, so he can't eat anything that has onion in it (unless I grow them myself) and there is a nifty recipe on making single serving meat loaf in the microwave in a coffee mug or a baking dish around that size... Does anyone have any ideas what I could use instead of onion soup mix that will not hinder the cookability of the dish nor the taste?
I will post the recipe if that will help.
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons 2% milk
1 tablespoon ketchup
2 tablespoons quick-cooking oats
1 teaspoon onion soup mix
1/4 pound lean ground beef
Additional ketchup, optional
Directions:
In a small bowl, combine the milk, ketchup, oats and soup mix. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Pat into a microwave-safe mug or custard cup coated with cooking spray.
Cover and microwave on high for 3 minutes or until meat is no longer pink and a meat thermometer reads 160°; drain.
Let stand for 3 minutes. Serve with additional ketchup if desired. Yield: 1 serving.
Ok... thanks... I will try substituting it for herbs... I am still new to substituting and leaving out, not quite sure what will happen... I can follow a recipe well... but I am still not sure what I can leave out or substitute yet... thanks...

Instead of the teaspoon of soup mix, sub 3/4 of a tsp of beef boullion powder (or a crushed cube) and 1/4 tsp. dry onion powder (if he can have it) or garlic powder.

You could try using cream of chicken or chicken noodle soup mix instead, or just add some vegetable stock powder such as vegeta brand. Otherwise just leave it out and add some fresh or dried herbs. Good luck Kaye

does that mean you can't use minced onions or onion salt spices?
cant you just skip the onion soup mix part, it only has 1 tsp?
