Ha! That is so funny about the bangs! I think I went to school with you!
I remember my mother giving me a Tonette permanent and if I would have had any idea how to do it at that tender age - I would have killed myself!
Talk about burnt to a crisp!

When I was little, my mother had my hair cut in a salon. Then she
decided she liked the look of braids. So I went through several years
of that. She'd tie them up into loops and put ribbons on them to hold
the loops together. I must have looked like a Russian refugee. I never
realized how old fashioned that was, until seeing pictures of old dates
in magazines of the turn of the century.
Then when I was in 5th or 6th grade, it was cut again. And this
time I became acquainted the hard way with the home permanent. I
can still smell that rankness, that could easily overwhelm anyone.
And those pinched tight perm rollers, were something else. Then
it was laying my head back while the cold solution could be poured
over the tightly curled hair. And then I think I had to sit and wait til
it was timed to perfection. Much like a roast, in the oven. After that
was up, then I think I had a white creamy solution poured over after
the rollers were removed. At some point, my hair was dried, and if
the toning solution was successful, then I didn't wear a singed look with burned hair ends. Otherwise, I probably looked like a refugee from
'Fright Night", or something from a lions den.
I don't remember how many perms I did have growing up. But they
were something I soon learned to dread, with much anxiety. The
solution was enough to take my breath away. And then having to sit
and wait until the solution set, was really hard to do. I didn't have many
salon perms, as I have worn my hair short for more years than I can
remember. I wore it short in highschool for much of the time when it
was the most popular style, next to the long rolled ends or the pony
tail.
Boys were so lucky. They only had to decide how short they
wanted their hair cut. Well until the 70s, when men started getting
perms too, after the Afro took off. Then they got the experience of a
lifetime. I'll bet each of them, remember having a perm for the first
time. You don't forget that smell.

When I was little, Mama always cut my hair straight around from ear lobe to ear lobe. Finished it with straight bangs on my forehead. Sort of like a dutchboy style. Hated that. My hair was so straight and fine, you couldn't do anything with it.
When I became a teen, Mom cut my hair the same way, and put in perms. Now, if i hated the dutchboy thing, I reeeeaally hated the dutchboy with a perm in it. Took forever to do the perm. It burned and itched. Was cold, running through my hair. I made up my mind that when I grew up I was never, never, never going to have another home perm.
I have had salon perms. They're not fun, but a whole lot easier to take than those home jobs.

You betcha! Toni! Pink, blue and white rollers for different sizes. Back in my younger years a poodle cut and perm was fairly popular. Do you remember those? Short curly hair all over...so funny.

Never got a home hair cut and my mom only tried a home perm once.
I got to go to my mom's hair dresser with her on Saturdays.

Sure, all the time. I hated perm day. Back then the fumes were so strong and they dripped and ran into you eyes making them burn. Whoa, that brought back some memories.

Mom always kept our hair cut short, but no perms, we all had naturally curly hair.
