Traditionally, Chinese is written in vertical columns from top to bottom; the first column is on the right side of the page, and the text runs toward the left. In modern times, the familiar Western layout of horizontal rows from left to right, read from the top of the page to the bottom, has become more popular, especially in the People's Republic of China (mainland China); the government there mandated left-to-right writing in 1955. The Republic of China (Taiwan) followed suit in 2004.

    Up and down.

I should warn you - a lot of Chinese people find getting that kind of tattoo ridiculous. But if you do, get an actual Chinese speaker to confirm it.

You would hate to get a tattoo that means something VERY different from what you intended. And believe me - it happens all the time.
