is there such thing as an independent or is it an imaginary term?
as far as i am concerned, one either represents people in poverty who are the majority in the world or the rich and/or the elites who are the minority. most people lean one way more than the other. even if we assume one is right in the middle 50/50 and takes no sides, he or she is necessarily helping the powerful. the non-action only proves conformity and acceptance of the status quo . it is the powerless who needs all the support it can get since the only way it can threaten the powerful is in a collective manner.there are no independents; we all influence one side more than the other by our actions and non-actions as well! what do you think?
try again guys.
what separates the right from the left is an economical one. individualism vs collectivism. one blames the individual for a problem he or she has and the other blames the environment and societies. these are the defining factors between right and left. in practice one leans one way more than the other. now would you answer the question using my scale. most people will fall to the right even the ones who are known as a leftist

just looking at the answers so far is a good evidence people don't see it my way plus it is more simplistic to believe that it is real and never question it's existence. people keep hearing the term and then it is there and commonly used. no one questions it!

WOW. Excellent post and I agree with you 100%
Don't expect anyone to really understand what you're saying, most people are only out for themselves, but thanks for a great post.

Independent I suppose is just a relative term meaning that one is not particularly aligned along a specific party line. As far as an independent politician running in US, UK, CA, Au or wherever I don't think that an independent would necessarily be right or left of the other parties. I suppose an independent could run on a platform specifically for the poor. Unfortunately so many of the poor look up to the so-called elite and in their own way support elitism.
A poor person running for election is not likely to get very far in most cases. Even the poor look down upon the poor. Its pretty much a locked system.

If you dabble in politics just for the fun and the games, I presume you can be as independent as all get out. But, basically, people either tend to support the "Me First" philosophy or the "People First" ideology. It depends upon your character, your outlook on life, your basic understanding of political mores, and there is no way a person can really be independent of this choice.
Because of these differences in political ideology, we either believe in the Trickle Down Theory where business is considered the most elite, the wealthy are praised and the poor are left to their own resources, or we believe in a nation with a government that keeps its eye on the wellbeing of ALL of its people and sponsors programs to meet that purpose.
It took just eight years to prove that one Administration could advance the theories of Me First and bring a once prosperous country to its knees.
The polls show that Obama's liberal approach is nibbling into the numbers Republicans used to carry. They clearly show that there are few Independents, if any, in our country, after all..

Wow! I have never seen myself as an independent. But I sure do not fit into your narrow categories. I represent those who love freedom. I represent those who vaule the constitution. I represent those who are willing to work hard. I represent those who have a moral conscience. I represent those who are willing to fight for what is right. I do not represent the poor or the rich. I do not represent the other nations. There is nothing I can do for them.

Believe me, there is no imaginary life. You reap what you sow. Inaction of the American Citizen is what got us here today.
Independents try to balance, yet when you have citizens that have no purpose in life, it is hard to restrain people who have the power to abuse.
Your question is so easy that even today, the majoity cannot comprehend and still label you one way or another.
Source(s): so lets see, I was born a confedrate & educated in yankee land. I served in the military active & reserve while working in the petroleum industry and enjoyed $5 gas (trafik was down and minimal SUV) irritated by endless taxation. I vote for, what comes out of congress affects my daily life - even when I disagree with Demokrants and Republikants. Yet it disgusts me to see people that do nothing to change their lot in life. No wonder China is taking over. An American Citizen that until now has enjoyed life, until it was bogged down(life) by inept Patriots living a dream(Imaginary). - 1 decade ago
I think you're wrong. An independent does not follow any one particular party line. For example, a person truly on the right typically believes in capital punishment and is against abortion. A person truly on the left typically believes in abortion and is against capital punishment. I consider myself independent and I am against both capital punishment and abortion.

There are such things but they usually don't win, for the very reasons you mention, many people think that way, though it is highly simplistic.
