Is 6 weeks to young for a mastiff puppy to leave its mum?

Hi i have alot of experiences with dogs but usually get pups at 8weeks old. The last pup i was stung with and she was only 4weeks old (i was told 8 weeks but the vet said she was only 4 weeks anway!) I understand the socialsiation of the pup and learning with its litter mates s crucial at 5-8 weeks but i have 3 other dogs so wont it learn from them. My 4 week old has overcome everything even thuogh i had alot of work for me to-do but shes a happy healthy dog now!

the pup is an english mastiff so would prefere getting it abit younger so he learns to be gentle with my smaller breed dogs.

thanks and best wishes Kim

Update:

im in the uk dont think there is a legal limit?

Update 2:

the breeder is pushing him to go at 6weeks he said the pups are advanced for there age as at 2weeks they opened their eyes? thanks for all your advice

A puppy isn't supposed to be weaned at that point. They usually wean the dog starting around 6 weeks and finish by 8. Puppies receive immune responses through breast milk, just like humans.

I don't know what was said about it being illegal, I don't think that is true. But it is good for the puppy, so I if given an option I would let him stay with the mom until 8 weeks.

He will learn to be gentle with smaller breeds irregardless. Dogs communicate pain through yelps and your new puppy should back off and he will learn through trial and error how much is too much. Having him two weeks earlier won't make much of a difference in regards to behavior.

8 weeks is minimum, 10-12 is best! And, the "breeder" was feeding you a line about the pups being "advanced", all pups open their eyes between 10 days and 2 weeks. I would not buy a puppy from this breeder, they are just out to make money, now that the pups are eating up food and needing shots she wants to move them so they don't cost her any more money!

Did she have the parents tested for hip displaysia and does she have the certificates to prove they passed the testing? I'm sure there are other genetic tests that need to be done on Mastiffs before they are bred, but, displaysia is the main one I can think of.

You should really do a lot more research before you pay any money for a dog. This "breeder' is a byb!

Wouldn't the breeders in the UK be right around the same in the states?

8 weeks. I would prefer a puppy that has been with litter mates as long as I can get it. 10-12weeks.

In the states, it's considered a bad/poor breeder who lets pups go at 6wks.

here's some good info to read about puppy socialization.

8 weeks is the minimum. 10 weeks is preferred. A 6 week old puppy isn't going to be gentle with anyone or anything. That extra few weeks is important for socializing and learning to act like a dog. Don't bring home a puppy that young.

There is no law that says you have to wait until they are 8 weeks, but it is better for the pups and if the breeder is pushing you to take them at six weeks then find another breeder. 8 weeks is the minimum.

The ideal time to bring home a new pup is 7-8 wks. 8-10 wks and the pup is in a fear period. And, no, your dogs are not the same as this pups litter mates and mother.

IMO i might call up this person and tell them you replaced your suggestions. every physique merchandising (or giving) domestic canines below 8 weeks previous is somebody you do no longer desire to be managing. accepted rule of respected breeders (no longer outdoor breeders). great breeds - 8-10 weeks previous Medium breeds - 10-12 weeks previous Small or toy breeds - 12-14 weeks previous (it truly is rather substantial for the small ones!)

I got my puppy when she was only 4 weeks old, I know everyone says that its to early and the socialization is huge at that age and through the next coming weeks, she is a bully breed ( Cane Corso/Pit Mix) and I haven't had any trouble with her! She is the perfect puppy, she is fine with anyone new she meets, along with little kids, and other dogs!

Good Luck with the new pup!

  • Legally, this is too young, yes

I am also in the UK and the legal limit is as per the "BREEDING & SALE OF DOGS (WELFARE) ACT"

All pups open their eyes at that age, regardless of breed.
