If Christians are following their religion to get into heaven, doesn't that make them selfish?
I am really curious now...people of faith claim to be really decent, caring people who give to the needy, etc.
But isn't the act of believing/following to get into heaven a selfish one?
Lots of people on here talk about "saving" atheists so that they'll go to heaven...by doing everything god says, they will end up in heaven.
So are people believing for a reason other than to get into heaven?
Please don't think I'm judging anybody, it's just something that crossed my mind.
I suppose an additional question would be:
Would you still believe/follow/have a relationship with god if you knew you weren't going to get to heaven?
Laus Trinitati - I gave you a thumbs up because I understand where you're coming from, but I am not in a negative place right now. I may not follow religion, but my life is a lot more selfless than many - I spend my life helping others. I personally don't need a faith to be selfless.
I don't mean to sound negative - I probably could have worded the question better. I was merely opening up some discussion to gain a better understanding, rather than judging.

There are a more than a few Christians that are not living the Christian life but ARE believers, this makes the system of salvation a flawed concept, for why would God forgive all sins just because you believe Jesus died for you?? Christians believe their morals come from God, but thanks to the 'Rosette Stone' (found in 1799 by French Archaeologists) we were finally able to read the Egyptian Book of the Dead and found that ALL 10 commandments were already about in Egyptian Mythos Religion years b4 it was in Pentateuch. The Christian salvation based religion is completely irrelevant to life, thus they ARE working for the next life, the ascending to Heaven, thus they are, in a way, selfish. If an Atheist helps an old lady with her bags to a car, or gives up their seat on the bus for a pregnant women, or takes their spare time to help clean up rubbish from their local parks, isn't this more genuine than some christian doing it because they fear going to hell?
This is why they fear Atheism

Christians believe that God sent his Son, Jesus to die for ALL of mankind's sin. Not just Christians. Our entry to Heaven is a gift (Grace) that God has given. The only thing that we must do is believe and repent. When Jesus died on the cross and ascended to Heaven God sent the Holy Spirit to help believers. I continually make bad choices in life. It is the Holy Spirit that convicts me in my heart to recognize wrongs, repent and thank God for his mercy. I know in my heart that no matter how badly I mess up, as long as I do those things and believe, I am going to Heaven. The blessing of peace and serenity are my rewards here on earth. That is not only during good times, but in bad times as well.
I am not just flying blind, Miss Peg, I have lived with myself as my guide and I have lived with God, through the Holy Spirit as my guide. Life is so much more rewarding this way. I don't always do the most altruistic things, but I am human. When I first decided to believe , I didn't know how, so I figured I wasn't doing anything else, and If there wasn't a God, then believing wouldn't offend anyone, but if there was a God and I disregarded Him. There would be hell to pay (no pun intended). So I stepped out in faith and it has been the best thing I have ever done.

Being atheist is selfish to be honest with you. Not to be mean or anything but it is true. Who said that because I follow God to get into heaven excludes you from doing the same? A true christian is someone that serves others. They aren't all that way I know but not everyone in eny group is the ideal person if you know what I mean. Once you have that relationship with God he changes you for the good and I don't know what it is but I think the best way to put it is its like being in love with someone. Its an amazing feeling! When you feel it you will know what I am talking about, and its not something that is about getting into heaven its about hanging out with dad.

We don't do anything in order to get into heaven. We ultimately end up in heaven because of the things we do and the way we live when we choose to follow the way of Jesus Christ. It's not selfish but, you make it sound that way because of your negative thoughts and the way you negatively word things. If anything it is selfless to choose to live your life the way Jesus Christ would want you to rather than just do whatever you want. I don't mean to sound harsh to you. Your mind is in a negative place right now. You should try positive thinking. It will keep you from sounding bitter and angry.

Peace mate,
Christ taught us to love our neighbours as ourselves. So if we want our neighbours to go to heaven then we have to start by making sure that we're on the path to heaven.
Orthodox Christianity teaches that there's no point in trying to convert people to Christianity if you yourself are not a Christian.
Orthodoxy also says that we should aim all our loves towards God not the Mountain of God (ie Heaven). If we aim for the Mountain and miss then we might not end up in such a nice place. But if we aim for God Himself and miss, we might at least still end up on the Mountain.

I try to be an ethical person because I believe it's the right thing to do. If someone is following a religion simply because they believe it will grant them entrance into heaven in the afterlife, they have no real spiritual discernment.

The best way I can answer is by sharing the lyrics to the following song:
If Heaven Never Was Promised To Me
Words and Music by Andrae Crouch
You may ask me why I serve the Lord,
is it just for heaven's gain,
or to walk those mighty streets of gold,
and to hear the angels sing?
Is it just to drink from the fountain,
that never shall run dry,
or just to live forever and ever,
in that sweet old by and by?
But if heaven never was promised to me,
Neither God's promise to live eternally,
It's been worth just having the Lord in my life,
Living in a world of darkness,
He brought me the light.
If there were never any streets of gold,
Neither a land where we'll never grow old,
It's been worth just having the Lord in my life.
Living in a world of darkness,
He brought me the light.
He's been my closest friend, down through the years;
And every time I've cried, He's dried all my tears.
It's been worth just having the Lord in my life.
Living in a world of darkness,
He brought me the light.
Living in a world of darkness,
He brought me the light.
Living in a world of darkness,
He brought me the light.

NO, not at all. It is obedience to God, who wills that all be saved, which means partake in the Divine Being.
Would you call a man selfish for marrying a woman. If so, you need to do something about yourself.

A Christan with bread came along and said to a person you must eat bread to have life and I did not offer you this same bread, then yes I would be selfish. But if I offered you this bread and you said no and went your own way looking for other food and you died it is not my fought but yours. For Jesus Christ is the bread of eternal life for all that will eat of it.

I don't know any Christians who believe in Jesus merely to get to heaven. Following Him isn't that easy, you have to do it for another reason. And that reason is, we love Him and His ways are perfect. It is a beautiful life to decide to walk in His ways.
