Snuff is like dip... its ground up real fine. Dry snuff is inhaled through the nose. I cant imagine doing this but it was more common a long time ago. My grandmother used to do it. Snuff can also be put in you lip like chew or dip. The 12 packets are called bandits... they put it in the pack for you so you don't have to worry about swallowing any of the fine pieces. They are usually used by someone just starting out. I play baseball and chew like a madman so I'll try to give you some pros and cons of smokeless vs. smoking.
Pros..
No lung damage
No nasty smell
Doesn't hurt any one else
Cheaper
Less chance of cancer
Not banned in public places
Cons...
Can cause mouth cancer
Stained Teeth
Can cause tooth decay
Have to spit in something, dip spit is nasty
Heartburn after long use
Very addictive... any time after I eat or I'm on the field I crave one

American style oral snuff, is said to have much lower health risks than smoking. However, Swedish snus has even less health risks. Nasal snuff on the other hand is considered to be the safest form of tobacco use. In all my research I have only found 1 documented case of cancer from its use. Nasal snuff comes in many flavors and styles, from menthol, mint, whiskey, plain, floral, fruit, cinnamon, and countless others. I have over 150 different snuffs in my personal collection. Like oral snuff, it is not banned in public, or a nuisance to those around you. Some of the undesirable effects, such as sneezing, coughing, and runny nose will go away very quickly with regular use. If you're going to use Tobago I highly recommend nasal snuff.

Snuff is still bad for you, but not as bad. Not quite as nice, either, you get less of a kick. But -- if you're looking for a safer way to get nicotine, which is why people use any of this stuff, why not just buy the Commit Lozenges at the drugstore? Same thing, but without the carcinogens that cause cancer. Not that I'm recommending any of these, of course, nicotine is addictive, but the lozenges and other nicotine replacement products are much safer than any of the others. There's also the e cigarette, which is a lot like smoking but without the tobacco, just nicotine.

In case you mean the snuff you put under your lip i would recommend it over smoking.
it's cheaper, you dont get lung cancer and it kills karies.
On the other hand its as mentioned before very addictive and can "burn" a hole in under your lip if you use it for a long time and always on the same spot.
Trivia: My grandfather had used snuff since he was around 20 and when he died at an age of 76 he had barely brushed his teeth in 30 years.
Of course the teeth were brown and ugly but he had not gotten a single hole in them :p

True.. but.. They dont effect the others around you.. Unlike cigarettes which cause sufforing from second hand smoke. So.. I guess that could make them NOT as bad for the others around you.. but they ARE as bad for the user.
