food ideas for elderly italian couple on holidays in canada?

in august we will have an elderly and conservative italian couple visiting our home on vancouver island. this couple has not been out of italy for decades and speak very little to no english at all.

i need food ideas for while they are here to keep them as comfortable as possible. what kind of meals, snacks, desserts etc would they eat at home and any great sites to give me more info?

all suggestions welcome and appreciated.

please bear in mind that this is not about north american versions of italian food, but the real deal.

Are these your relatives? I can only suggest, what mine usually prepare and eat ...what is in season and fresh...simple plain ingredient food...roasted meat chicken, rabbit, eye round... little to no seasoning always garlic, salt olive oil...on a pan in to the oven...

a simple pasta. always a light tomato gravy nothing heavy... plain salad w/ vinegar and oil

Potato peeled and sliced length wise and and wedged salt garlic olive oil then roasted in oven with some nice carrots too

    String beans fresh and blanched.

light chicken broth with a cheese tortellini and escarole soup...

    Prosciutto, dry sauge, Aged provolone...

Over the years I have had a lot of visitors in my home, and from all over the globe. I honestly believe that it is a mistake to try to "accommodate" their dietary needs. Just serve them whatever you would eat on a normal day. Nothing too spicy, or fried, but just good tasty home cooking. If they want Italian food, I am sure that there has to be a good Italian restaurant in your neck of the woods. Remember, when in Rome . . . . .

    Just my thoughts!

They will probably enjoy the local food fare as they have Italian food at home. Salmon in that area is fresh ,so be adventurous.

Go to Stanley Park and take them to see the totems and other native sites. Visit the Cowichan and Salish knitting outlets.

Cook what you normally would cook. They are coming to Canada to see what Canada is like. The can eat Italian food when they go back to Italy.

I am not sure if the recipes are the problem as much as the quality and type of ingredients used.

A lot of our Italian food is much too sweet. I am not from Vancouver, but we (Winnipeg) have Italian food markets, I would purchase ingredients from there.

If I were visiting Canada I'd want to experience Canadian Cuisine. A good one is fish, especially walleye. Maybe some game, like moose. Or maybe Inuit foods.

Squid is tasty. Otherwise...it's fresh calamari.
