HOMEMADE PLAYDOUGH
1 c. flour
1 c. salt
1 tbsp. cooking oil
2 tbsp. cream of tartar
1 c. water
Stir dry ingredients together in a 3 quart saucepan. Add water and colorings. (You can use food coloring or non-toxic poster or tempera paints.) Stir to mix well. Cook over medium heat until mashed potato consistency. It should take only 3 to 5 minutes unless you have doubled the recipe. Turn out onto a counter or board. Knead to cool. Store in air tight container (zip lock bags are good).
If you use paint to color, be cautious! Use only a small amount. The colors will be more brilliant than with food coloring, but it is easy to use too much and then the dough will leave color on hands, clothing and whatever surfaces it comes in contact with.

The home made Kaajals are dark and long lasting but they do smudge a bit if rubbed. The recipe to make is quite simple. Take 2 mud Diyas or Lamps. Light a flame using a cotton stub with aid of any oil. Cover the lamp or diya with the other one leaving a little space for air. Put enough oil so that it lasts for some 6-8 hours. After the flame dies, collect the soot from lamp and use dry kajal. It is very dark and while using, take in finger and blow away extra quantity. All the best! Poonam

1 c water
2-3 drops food coloring that you want
1¼ c flour
1/4 c salt
(add 1 package of Koolaid if you want to scent the dough)
1½ T vegetable oil
Bring water and food coloring to a boil.
In another bowl mix flour and salt (and koolaid). Make a well in the center flour mixture and add the boiling water and oil. Stir very well.
When the mixture is cool enough to handle, knead the dough for about two or three minutes until looks like playdough.
Thats it!!

1 cup Argo or Kingsford Corn Starch
1 pound (2 cups) baking soda
1-1/4 cups cold water
1 tablespoon Mazola Oil
1 tablespoon food color OR 1 to 2 teaspoons Rit Dye or paste food color
In medium saucepan stir corn starch and baking soda. Add water and oil all at once and stir until smooth.
Stirring constantly, cook over medium heat until mixture reaches the consistency of SLIGHTLY dry mashed potatoes. (Mixture will come to a boil, then start to thicken, first in lumps and then in a thick mass; it should hold its shape). do not overcooked, crafts may crack.
Color can be added to batches to make beads for necklaces, flowers and even animals and figures, the list is endless.
