Question about physical exam?
I am a male in my early 20's and I need to get a physical exam soon and I was wondering what the doctor will check for during the physical? Should I request for anything to be checked for during the exam? Can I ask him to do a rectal exam even though I may not need it right now? Also should I give a urine sample for testing?

It is your physical so it is your right to have examined all that you want
He will ask for a fresh urine sample himself.
He will check all you vital signs:eyes hearing BP your nuts in case of a hernia.Your weight length and he will ask a lot of questions you simply answer truthfully.
And I may have forgotten something:but it is like a walk in the park:nothing to it.

Most of it will depend on what the physical is for........why do you "need" a physical in your words. If it is not your regular doctor they will have you fill in a questionnaire about your health and family medical history. Normally they will check your vitals (pulse, bp, temp. respiration, eyes, balance, etc) and probably do a check of glands and lymph nodes. At your age a check for testicular cancer (genital exam) and hernia (turn head and cough) would be common.
Other exam is based on history you provide and reason you are seeking exam (work physical, specific signs/symptoms, etc). The digital rectal exam is sometimes done but if you are concerned about Prostate Cancer or enlarged prostate (urination problems) tell the doctor and I can't see why they would decline your request.
Lab work (blood and urine) may be done depending on the doctor or insurance plan (if they pay). It is good to be screened (have lab work done) as a preventative measure.
I am concerned from the nature of your questions that you are concerned about a specific health condition. I'm not a doctor but have some knowledge so if you have specific questions feel free to send me an Email via the link.

The will go over some things with you and ask some questions. Then a nurse will bring you a gown probable and tell you to take everything off and put it on and the nurse will leave for a little and she will return with the doctor and be in the room for the exam and the doctor will check you for hernia and your testicles for cancer. Not much to worry about but embarrassing with someone else in the room to watch.

He/She'll tell you everything you need to do. Sure you can request anything you want but it's usually only good to do it if theres something bothering you. The whole rectal exam thing sounds like you want some sexy stimulation ;) jk

Ask for the whole works. I'd feel cheated if the doctor didn't check everything.

if you have concerns you want to address with the doctor there should be no problem requesting tests and procedures... if you get a doctor that says "ohh that's not necessary",,, seek out another doctor...
