how do I get the mildew smell out of carpet?

A few days ago my daughter had a tea party gone bad, which resulted in an enormous amount of water being dumped on the carpet and couch. I soaked it up as well as I could, but apparently it wasn't enough because now the whole house has a musty, mildewy smell. Any tips on what I can do to get rid of that smell?

Unfortunately, the problem is probably down to the subfloor and pad. It may all need to be replaced. But before you go that route, turn a fan on the spot for a day or so to get it thoroughly dry. Then apply some enzyme cleaner, like Nature's Miracle found in the pet section at the grocery store or in a pet store.

Don't mix carpet cleaner with anything, it will decrease the efficiency of the cleaner and may not be safe. Instead of using carpet cleaner, rinse with the hottest water possible and try spraying with Febreeze allergen reducer. It may help to use a urine spray for pet odors. My daughter peed the carpet one night after falling asleep on the floor and we could not get the smell out even after shampooing several times. I used a pet urine remover in my carpet cleaner and it worked great. Also carpets should not be cleaned with cleaner every time. You should go on an 18 month schedule of rinse, wait six months, rinse, wait six months and then clean. Extra cleaner not rinsed out of the carpet may leave the odor and definitely holds soil in the carpet fibers.

Try using a rug cleaner. You can rent them at home improvement or some grocery stores. The soap they sell for them works great. Or, you can try to soak the area again with vinegar and water. The vinegar will take the smell out, don't use a ton or your will only smell that instead.

But, chances are you will have to replace the carpet. Sorry.

You could try sprinkling baking soda on the area and letting it sit over night, then vacuum it up. I would put a bowl with some baking soda in it to absorb the odor in the room. If that doesn't work try a bowl with some lemon juice in it for a couple of days.

pour lots of baking soda all over the area that was covered in water. i mean, completley cover it in baking soda. leave overnight. (and all day if possible) baking soda is amazing for getting moisture of out things. this is what i do whenever my daughter insists she can water the plants and ends up getting the entire watering can all over the carpet. once vacuum up, the smell should be disperse.

Get a big box of baking soda and sprinkle it on the offending area. Leave it there overnight if possible. Next day vacuum the baking soda and the odor should be gone!

you need to pull the caret in that area, and remove the padding, place a fan to dry the carpet out thoroughly, replace pad with new, have it pro-cleaned, have a anti-mildew agent applied. good luck and hope this helps.

    throw it out

if you dont have the water out in 72 hours, you get mold, and health problems come...
