Are lawns forbidden in Islam? Looking at Google Earth, can't see any lawns in Iran, Iraq, Gaza, anywhere!?
I am fascinated with differences between life in the USA, and life in the rest of the world. Right now, i'm trying to find out if suburban neighborhoods full of houses and lawns exist outside of North America/Europe. Especially interested in what kind of houses middle class families have in the middle east.
The idea that it's a giant desert is not correct. Iran has a very diverse climate, and is very green in many parts. You find plenty of grass and trees, but no houses with lawns. I just don't understand it. I want to find out why lawns are a thing of the Western cultures
How are lawns a wasteful luxury? Anyone who has driven across country or taken a flight at least knows that the majority of the US is uninhabited wild land. There is no shortage of space due to suburban living in the USA.
To the guy who disagrees with my statement that most of the USA is uninhabited, you obviously haven't seen this country with your own eyes. Most of the US is uninhabited wild land.

Lawns are kind of a european fascination. European civilization was based mainly on agriculture and pastoralists. Livestock was raised on fallow lands, and commons. A king's wealth was measured in part by the vast expanse of green they could use to feed livestock. Keeping the grass from being eaten all the way off was a sign of good stewardship over the land. This preoccupation over green grass, cropped, but not cropped to death has led to the introduction of this style in many civilized parts of Europe, America, and Australia. Part of this preoccupation requires the introduction of european grass species in these parts.
The grass is not naturally suited to some of the climates where it has been introduced. Keeping it green requires watering, and that water has to be transported in from elsewhere. That requires a rather large infrastructure, which some would call wasteful, since the only thing you can do with the lawn is make mulch out of the grass clippings.
I'm no expert of Islamic culture, but I'm pretty sure that there's nothing against a lawn in that culture. I'm also pretty sure that Islamic Culture places a higher value on nomadic pastoralism, where the flocks are moved from place to place as the food is expended. This method of pastoralism allows more of the grass to be eaten, sometimes turning it brown. Larger cities where flocks are taken in and out often would have no grass due to the constant presence of the herds. If my understanding here is correct, then the people of islamic nations would normally not consider a green lawn to be normal. Also, the mass of islamic citizens usually have a little less money than the mass of American citizens. Building up the dams, pipes, and water treatment plants needed to bring Arabic citizens the water to grow lawns probably isn't a big priority.

Where did you get such an idea from? I lived almost all my life in the Middle East, and houses do have lawns. The houses that I lived in had lawns including the one that i live in now. Even people who have very small areas of land with their house, they always plant them with flowers or trees. I can say this is the case for all the Arab countries I have visited in the Middle East (e.g. Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, UAE-Dubai).
In the middle of cities, like the rest of the world, the buildings are normally multi-story buildings, and normally have no lawns, though trees are planted on the sides of streets.

First Learn about a religion... (atleast the basics....) before asking a stupid question like Are lawns forbidden in Islam?
90% of the middle east is a desert!!!!!!!! It's not easy to have lawns.... and most people live in apartments..... Not houses....
I live in middle east.... so i have first hand experience,,,And Lawns are not a Very common thing in Asia..... Or at least its different from the lawns in American and European countries....
Addition: All these countries have parks... and greenery... that is because the government i trying to make it that way... making More parks..... lining the road dividers with grass and flowers and Palm trees.... It is not natural.... these are all man made...... And Middle east is a freaking desert!!!!! I live here.... So when you see green here.... Its because people have worked day and night to make it so...

nicely, i think the 1st factor is that i like being outdoors, and searching after my backyard supplies me yet yet one greater reason to do basically that. I also celebrate with the acts of planting, besides as nurturing the different issues that I put in. I additionally like how effectively it makes your belongings seem non violent and nicely-taken-care-of: you have undesirable siding or peeling paint which you will no longer have the money for to get to easily yet... yet boy, that morning glory it quite is mountaineering the fence is a effective touch! It basically type of pulls the eyes faraway from despite flaws the the remainder of your residing house has. i've got seen some residences that had effective paint, sparkling residing house windows, solid shingles on the roof, uncluttered... yet by using fact the backyard grow to be yellow and patchy, the entire residing house regarded like a sell off. it quite is all approximately taking delight in the region you call residing house. So for as long as i'm able to, you will locate me pushing a lawnmower each and every weekend or tending a flower mattress. So if it quite is important to you, see you later as i'm around, you're no longer on my own!

This is just off the top of my head but isn't it mostly desert over there? It is hard to find soil with enough minerals to support much plant life, that region of the world does not get much rainfall either so that doesn't help.

geeeezzz.. use some common sense , yeah some trees and deciduous plants grow in the middle east, but its STILL a desert, its STILL sand.
and they do have grass, its a different type, it grows about 6 -10 feet tall , the grass here in the western hemisphere wont grow there.
if it could grow there, it still could not because there is NOT an adequate water supply , theres no yearly rainfall there.
if you are wealthy enough there , you can have dirt "top soil" trucked into your backyard, plant a regular yards worth of grass and water the crap out of it. but if im not mistaken, even the wealthy jerks over there dont waste water on a lawn. i think theres only 1 golf course on the whole continent , and its retarded, and way to hot to play.
common sense answer,
our grass dont grow there for the same reason bananas and oranges dont grow in canada.
Source(s): . the more i think about it , the more your question is just retarded, only a 3 rd grader or younger shouldnt know this. - grodhi96792Lv 41 decade ago
Water. Many of these countries have to get water from a well or other source and consider ornamental uses out of the question. Water is a commodity that we take for granted. These countries also have a lower annual rainfall than us so what water they have must be conserved and use wisely.

I lived in Korea. One time I saw a lawn mower for sale there. I have no Idea what anybody would use it for.
Not a lot of Muslims there.

It is very hot it would take away water from gardens and no they don't have much lawns like you see here.It is a desert.I am sure they grow whatever the native plants are.

Lawns are a supremely wasteful luxury.
If people spent half the amount of time and cash growing their own food instead of primping a status symbol they would eat better and have a much smaller impact on the planet. Just 'cause the land's "empty" doesn't mean you should waste resources on useless green stuff.
