What do people think about changing your accent from how you naturally speak?

I'm going to change mine for the stage because I can't get decent parts in Shakespeare plays with my cockney accent and after much thought I don't think it's a bad thing to get rid of the cockney, I wont miss it, but some people think this is bad for some reason.

I'm 28, I'm not a kid and I don't have any delusions about an acting career, it's just a hobby but I like it and I've never liked my accent.

What do you guys think?

By the way, I'm not asking if I should do it or not, I'm already doing it, but I just wondered what people thought since I keep getting such mixed reactions from people.

I think you should do whatever you feel comfortable with. You are not you because of your accent, remember that. But don't change your accent to fit in with the other crowd, just be yourself. People always do that, judging people by their accent, and I think its wrong, but if you want to get a good part and if you want to sound convincing, go for it!

Just do anything accessory involves you evidently anywhere you're. I consider it might be a gigantic agony to check out and change it whenever you went someplace else or met exceptional individuals. Just when you consider that you do not appear British does not imply you cant have that accessory. I'm British dwelling in Australia and I spend plenty of time round individuals from England and while I speak to them I have a tendency to mold again into that accessory unconsciously. If you believe secure talking British, preserve it. I wager it sounds excellent.

I change my accent every time I visit the US. My American friends complain that they can't understand me (I'm Bahamian- Caribbean) so I just switch my accent to a kind a American-Bahamian hybrid and I talk slower.

If you think that it'll get you where you want to be in life then go for it.

  • Change it if you want, Charlize Theron changed her accent from South African to American in order to boost her acting career. If you have to change your accent to boost you're career succes then, fair enough, but if someone changes their accent simply so they can climb up a social strata then I think that's wrong

I say however you want to talk is fine and shouldn't really bother any one. If it does, then oh well, because it's however you wish to present yourself to others. If your happy and accept it, then nothing else should matter :)

Source(s): PS: I sometimes like to change my accent to one that sounds as if I'm British, but it's just because I love to do it and I'm not afraid to either :D
