Why are there so many atheists on a religious/spiritual Q/A?
It would seem a true atheist whould have no interest at all on a message board dealing with God? Yet you find so many here? If there were a question dealing with the reality of the tooth fairy, as a Christian, I would have no interest in this.
The reason for my question is that I am assuming that in a Religion Q/A, I will get spiritual, religious questions answered. Proper answers can't come from an atheist, with a perspective in such variance to mine.
Former believers, ok, I guess... a refutation on what Christians might say about atheists, ok. Unfortunatly many give atheism a really bad name because of their comments as seen here. I would suggest to those with rude or derogatory commentary, to rethink their behavior. Do you really want Christians to think that all atheists make comments like these?
As far as debate goes, I would personally rather debate the various interpretations of 'Christian' thinking. Which is why I choose this Q/A.

You are mistaken.
The most objective perspectives are from atheists on the topic of religion and spirituality. Most atheists were former god-believers.
Also, this particular atheist's hobby happens to be comparative religions and religious rituals. I am here to:
1) Refute the lies often told about atheists and atheism
2) Share my knowledge of the subject by answering questions
3) Encourage critical thinking

The topic of "Atheism" is somewhat of a cross reference to religion. If there was an "Atheist" section; the main topics of discussion; would be the flaws of religion, the corruption of religion, the lack of logic of religion. There would also be discussion and enquiries to the many wars and negativity cause by religion; and trust me there is quite a lot.
There is also the fact; that many religious people post questions about; atheism and atheists and post it in this section. And I am sure many atheists would be more the interested to answer their inquiry.
Religion is very dangerous and we often worry about it; in case it gets out of control again. That is why we need to be raising awareness of the facts and theories in opposition. If you don't want to accept them; well I'm afraid that is your choice; but at least we tried.
And I can guarantee you; the very day Yahoo Answers launches an "Atheist" section, the religious community will be swarming in like an angry mob of wasps.

Maybe because it's a Q/A, you don't want people who ask questions to only get answers from one little area of the public.
That's like doing a project and only using one source of information.
It'd be irresponsible to just leave people seeking knowledge and understanding (especially young people) in the hands of information from just one side of the story.. and not really plausible to think that it would ever happen.
EDIT: Also thumbs up for Captain Cod, his answer hit the nail on the head. It's all about promoting understanding and keeping an open-mind.

We are in a board called religion and Spirituality, that has NOTHING to do with God directly
We are here because Atheism could be considered a religion, and because its fun to **** with you close minded Christians, because you guys seem to think you own this board

God doesn't exist but the idea of god exists. The idea of god is what is addressed.
If a majority of the population in your country believed in an invisible tooth fairy and thought the invisible tooth fairy's thousand year old book was a good place to base laws on you might look a little into this tooth fairy and its book.

You might have an interest if many people, for no reason, believed the tooth fairy existed, berated you for not believing in it, and wanted the government to pass laws requiring all teeth to be placed under pillows when they come out, and for the government to then provide two shiny quarters (or whatever the going rate is) for each tooth.

Obviously you have not looked at the number of questions directed to atheists on R&S. It is also apparent that you have no clue about how religion effects society by trying to legislate morality (or more appropriately the lack of it), to justify and legalize discrimination (Christian hatred of homosexuals has been rampant over the last 30 to 40 years at least) and to try to erode what little is left of our education system by teaching mythology as a competition to science.
Are you really this blind?

Same reason why car crashes attract the attention of so many drivers in perfectly intact cars.
And yes, that was a metaphor for christianity and the quantity of atheists attracted to it.

Atheists can still be spiritual. They also enjoy sharing why they believe what they do. Now, some come on to just belittle everyone, but the same could be said of some religious folks as well.

For the same reason somebody from Baton Rouge might go to a message board dealing with Phoenix.
Suppose some people from Phoenix were online talking about how stupid people from Baton Rouge were, and how sinful they were for not being from AZ.
I suspect the Baton Rougers would flock there to defend themselves.
Lots of Baton Rougers might just be interested in finding out about Phoenix, too. They might be considering visiting there.
