Funeral ettiquette question?
My mother-in-law passed away this past weekend. I know that we need to send thank you cards to people who sent flowers or made charitable donations in her name.
Do we also need to send a thank you to people who have sent sympathy cards to our home?

If it was just a card, no, you don't need to send a thank you. Your funeral director should be able to give you a good list to use for people that you need to send thank you cards to.
The list should go something like this:
Minister, pall bearers, anyone who sent flowers, anyone who provided food or any other service (singing, piano playing, reading), anyone who made a donation or included money in a sympathy card.
Talk to your funeral director, I may have missed some.
Sorry for your loss.

No, you do not need to send cards to people who sent cards. It would be nice for you to eventually acknowledge the people who sent cards when the occasion arises--such as when you send the person a birthday card or holiday card. You could add something like "thank you for your kind card during my time of grief--it really meant a lot to me."

No - but when you see them it would be nice to let them know you appreciated their thoughtfulness. Most people put a notice in their local paper thanking all those who visited, sent cards and attended the funeral.
