I was reffing a game where a freshman QB hung in the pocket and got off a TD pass just as he got creamed by a defender. He was laying flat on his back but he busted his femur just below the pelvis. His entire leg was turned 90 degrees and he was in serious pain.

The EMT's cut his pants off right there on the field and had to re-set the leg before they would splint it and transport him. They wrapped a leather strap around this ankle and pulled really hard while three guys rotated his leg back into place. Did you ever see the beginning of "Saving Private Ryan" with guys crying for their mommy? That's what he was doing.

Another one that looked bad, but wasn't. My first college game, a guy on the kickoff team was lying face down and not moving after the opening kickoff. He was also making a strange gurgling sound. The coach said, "Oh, he's snoring. He just got knocked out again." My only thought was, "Again? This happened before and you still are playing him?"

Hey mattapan, the Bills TE is walking and almost like normal. Lions Mike Utley, NY Jets Dennis Byrd comes to mind as does Joe "The Mouth" Theismann and 49ers Bryant Young.

Kevin Everett of the Buffalo Bills comes to mind.

Also, at an NIFL game a few years ago (for the uninformed they were like the minor league of the minor league of indoor football) my home town team played a team that was week to week on if they were together. Essentially each week when they had a game they would just call anyone in their area with football experience and say "Hey you want to come play this week with the team?" It was amazing these guys held their franchise the entire season. Anyway one of these poor guys got hit by one of my team's players. His shoe was pointing backwards after the hit. We're like "wow knocked his shoe backwards." Then the trainers came out with the scissors and cut the laces off, and pulled the footware from the foot and thats when we seen that his entire foot was in reverse. Sickening. And all the poor guy was doing was basically playing ball with his friends for 300 bucks that week b/c his town couldn't really sustain a team.

Everyone remembers the Joe theisman injury perhaps because Joe Theisman and Lawrence Taylor were the players involved, but there was an injury to a Raider RB, Napoleon McCallum, which looked even worse. McCallum was being gang tackled and his knee ended up being folded 90 degrees forward in the direction that it's not sopposed to bend. It makes me wince thinking about it.

I remember Willis McGahee at Miami against Ohio State for the Championship, someone put a helmet to his knee and his knee literally "reversed", so his kneecap was 180 degrees in the wrong direction....ouch

A tight end for the Bills broke his neck last year in the first game of the season. He has been in rehab since and they hope he may walk someday.

Worst one I remember was Joe Theismann having his career ended by Lawrence Taylor, though I was VERY young at the time.
