Question to atheists who don't believe in "sin"?

Sin is a religious construct that goes way beyond what we secularly find to be immorality, amorality and bad ethics.

However, when atheists say they don't believe in sin, we often get the response that we don't care about the following:

Rape, theft, murder... and so on.

How do they not understand that not accepting sin, doesn't suddenly mean accepting all criminal things? Sin takes MORAL things and turns them immoral (such as masturbation which is a healthy and natural part of life).

Morality doesn't come from religion - especially not a specific religion - in fact, religion is what distorts morality into immorality. It implies that babies, who are atheist, NEED religion in order to go good.

(So how come Sweden's crime rate isn't sky rocketing? What about Japan's?)

"Good people do good things. Bad people do bad things. But it takes religion to make good people do bad things." - Steven Weinberg

Update:

"where's the question?"

--How do they not understand that not accepting sin, doesn't suddenly mean accepting all criminal things?--

Added questions, if you care to answer, are in parentheses.

Update 2:

"whats the question?"

It's written above twice.

Update 3:

upyours lacks understanding grammar.

Update 4:

upyours is still incorrect. My sentence is grammatically correct. (The question is also correctly written.)

(Btw, I'm a Grammarian. Check my profile.)

Weinberg lost relatives in the Holocaust even though he's from the USA. He's got a pretty strong opinion about this and creationists. I remember about 10 years ago his entire speech at a conference on Intelligent Design was "No" in reference to its title. And back he went to U. Texas to work on the Unified Theory in physics.

Knowing right from wrong and making mistakes is part of human nature. Tagging it as sin is just plain silly.

Why do you address these questions to atheists? Wouldn't your questions be more appropriately directed at 1) people who believe the Big Bang occurred 2) people who believe that apes are currently spontaneously turning into humans (if such people exist) I am an atheist and I do think that current available evidence suggests that the Big Bang occurred. I don't believe that apes can turn into humans. I also don't believe "seeing is believing." I base my beliefs on evidence. When the evidence in favor of a certain idea becomes strong enough, I'm likely to believe that idea (at least until new evidence leads me to change my belief).

i am an atheist that is completely agaist any type of religion and this is one of the main reasons i believe what i do

in my opinion, religion creates the notion that if you sin you go to hell, or a similar version of it depending on your religion. But most of these sins are black and white and judge a person by their immediate actions and never on their circumstance. However, the first thing that you learn in psychology is that people always blame the person and never the situation, and that you should look at the situation as whole in order to evaluate why someone did what they did

For example, as you said theft. Someone could steal money off of someone they see walking down the street and everyone automatically assumes that the theif is a bad person. But, what these people do not know is that perhaps this person just got fred from the person they stole from for no particular reason, and now they have no way of supporting their family. Yes, the theif must take resposability for their actions, but they can not have all of the blame thrust upon them.

I hope I made at least a bit of sense...

'Sin' isn't actually to do with morality or immorality at all - it's only about obedience and disobedience. Sin is defined as contravening the orders of the relevant deity. It has nothing to do with the judgment of good and bad behaviour according to conscience, which is what morality is, by definition.

So religion is about following orders, and it's also about self-interest (seeking a place in heaven, avoiding hell). Religion is therefore amoral (not about what is morally right or morally wrong at all).

  • Some things are immoral, they are only called "sins" because the book says they are. That doesn't mean things like rape, theft and murder are acceptable in society, just because we don't call them sins, as such.

How do they not understand that not accepting sin, doesn't

suddenly mean accepting all criminal things?

-I don't accept criminal things or 'sin'.

how come Sweden's crime rate isn't

    sky rocketing? What about Japan's?

-they don't need Jesus, 'original sin' doctrine, or the bible.

Also, I agree with the quote.

The success or failure of your deeds, does not add up to the sum of your life. Your spirit cannot be weighed! Judge yourself by the intentions of your actions, and by the strength with which you faced the challenges that have stood in your way. The Universe is so vast, and we are so small, there is only truly one thing we can control; whether we are good or evil...

No. Atheists don't believe in the word "sin" because it is used by Christians, and it is widely known that if you "sin" you must "repent".

Of course there is BREAKING THE LAW.

Although a sin? A sin is basically BREAKING THE LAW, which Christians had to make up a fancy Latin word to replace.

The concept of 'sin' doesn't exist in religions like Jainism, Buddhism, Taoism etc.

Sweden's crime rate is rising alarmingly, largely due to immigrants who identify themselves as monotheists who come from religiously conservative countries.

"Sin" is one of MANY religious NONSENSE words that were INVENTED for the purpose of keeping people ignorant, the primary goal of all religions! The world needs to get PAST these old words and concepts about "absolute" morality!
