An American Question?
WHY do I have to "Press one for English"??
Do they have this on the phones in Europe.. Do they have buttons for other choices of language?
All you ppl that are mad about this- How did we make it all these many years with just English. Do you thing you could get translations for a driving test, Welfare, or voting in English from any other countries. The PM in Australia just published a statetment that either you assimilate or leave.

This is what gets me. You go to the DMV & they have lines for Spanish speaking people to get translatione & part of the driving book writtian in Spanish. The ROAD SIGNS are writtian in ENGLISH! Yes,it is very maddening. They take the test in Spanish, but the road signs are in English. How stupid is that? If you can't reat the road sign, then they shouldn't be able to pass the test,I say. I'm with the Australins. We here in the USA need to learn a thing or two from them.
And I hate having to press 1 for English. They don't have a line for any of the other languages, such as Chinese or German. (or any other languages, just Spanish)
You have just found a very hot topic. We should ask the ladies of the View to talk about it. LOL

I do agree with the PM of Australia; however, our governments in both the US and Canada have decided since our countries have so many different nationalities coming to our countries and moving into neighbourhoods where they congregate to be amongst their own it is best for business. Our governments do not make it mandatory for new immergrants to learn our language and allow them to take over neighbourhoods rather than to assimalate into the mainstream society where they will have more exposure to English and the western way of life.
Where I live there is now a majority of non born Canadians of the same race in the same area. The only ones that speak English are the teens and the children, thus the commerce is of the same race majority. I am beginning to feel like a stranger in my own neighbourhood.
Newt Gingrich had it right when it was proposed to have a dual language in the US. He stated that the US was founded on English and that was the main language, unlike Canada that decided to have a dual language, French and English. I can understand the reason for Canada welcoming French, but not maintaining this dual language only is a farce.
Man, I could go on about the pandering our Canadian Government does. Because those of the majority of non born Canadians install their own in government, thus the pandering.
Monster houses with illegal suits are constructed taking over what was once pristine neighbourhoods and nothing is done about it.
Women being abused and murdered, because this is how it is done back home.
One day there will be a race war in Canada and it won't be started by the ones that are Canadian born, English speaking. It will be started by those of the same colour, but of different faiths and idiologis and will spill over by accident into the other races once it hits the streets and private homes of those minding their own business. It will be self defense.

I am unconcerned about pressing one for English. It's just another in a likely long series of buttons I will probably press. And it breaks up the often intensely long wait to speak to an actual person.
What genuinely irks me is pressing for English and then getting someone who doesn't speak it very well and messes up my account info( has happened).
Outsourcing by corporate bigwigs is a far greater annoyance to me than people coming here to clean toliets for a better life.

As far as anyone knows, multilingualism hasn't killed anyone.Intolerance has.
edit:
Oh and if you don't believe there can be unity in diversity, let's put it this way:The U.S has many enemies and is so disliked all over the world. It is entirely in its best interest to treat all its citizens with respect and dignity.Yeah the Spanish speaking citizens too,and there's plenty of them.
Assimilate or leave? Are we discussing Immigration here?there's an Immigration section for this!I am talking about citizens! It is the second most-common language in the United States after English,ya know
Spanish has always been spoken in the US and I hope it will always be .Whether we press 2 or not

hm dont be that ignorant, you must be very old and narrow minded. Just so you know, this is common in almost every country around the world. In spanish speaking countries, they have the englis and french option.
In Europa they have the danish, english, other option
where have you been??
I agree with Olan Black (wow).... We are one of the very very few countries in which we arent taught a second language.
Those who think like you, are just ignorant people. sorry but its true.

because English is the language spoken here doesn't mean it is the only language spoken. the US is one of the few countries that doesn't teach their children a foreign language. so the so called poor countries can speak English, but we can't speak any other language.
learning and understanding another language is good.
press 2 por espaniol.

Agree. It is BS.
English is the primary, dominate language. One should have to press the button for any other language, English should be the default.
- PureDelightLv 61 decade ago
Does it really pain your lazyass to just press a button? People find the stupidest crap to complain about.
- AshilleLv 61 decade ago
I agree. English ought to have been the language by default as it is the spoken language in America.
