tan is often confused with tanto

    tanto is an adjectiv

so tan never changes; it modifies verbs

Tanto...como is a comparison between two nouns.

For example, if I were to say, I have as many pencils as pens. That translates to Tengo tantos lapices como plumas.

Tanto can be tanto, tanta, tantos or tantas. It depends on the noun after it.

There is also the tan..como comparison which similar but it is used with adjectives. For example, I am as tall as you. Estoy tan alto como tu.
