  • Having issues with the introduction of my essay (poe)?

    hi,

i'm writing a research paper on the short stories of edgar allan poe and how he incorporates other's art into his own art. some people call it plagiarizing, and unoriginality but i think it's an implication of how well-read and intuitive he was.

anyway, i have a really long outline, but none of it is my writing. i have quotations from the book and from my research and i have ideas on what i want to write but i just can't seem to start it.

sorry, i usually have a good idea of where to start but....i'm brain dead:(

  • birthday present that's not too expensive, and it's for me?

okayy, so my birthday's coming up and it's a pretty big one, 16, but i'm not having a huge party or anything. my parents are finalizing their divorce and both are kinda short on cash. not really short because my dad's a pretty successful doctor. also, i have a twin. so the birthday's going to be even more expensive. well, dad is getting us both cars, Yaris's and mom wants to get us something we really want too but she doesn't have that much money. my twin got a few jewelry items and a big purse, but i haven't picked anything yet and my birthday's in, like, three days--i know, not much time but i've been so busy and my party's not till february. i kinda have an idea, but my mom's an emotional sort and i don't want to pick something too cheap because she'll think that i'm not telling the truth. here is my idea:

a book by Irving Stone, he's an amazing author but most of his books are out of print, so i thought i could find one on Amazon; the only thing is, i've heard some bad things about the sellers on Amazon and now would be an absolutely terrible time for my mom to get scammed. plus, it would probably be under $10.

any other ideas? i love Green Day, Phantom of the Opera, Lord of the Rings, most books, and my cat:)

    thanks in advance!

  • hypothetical question?10pts!!?

okay, pretend that your parents just got divorced. your dad, who is from the middle east, is going back to visit his family in Pakistan. you know everything isn't safe there yet and before he leaves, he tells you where all his legal papers are and just how much of a life insurance policy he has. he tears up, which is very unusual. he also says that if you have any doubts or questions about him, just to ask. your mom has told you all kinds of vague, 'illegal' things your dad has done, as well as never to get on a plane with him, heading to Pakistan. he says that you know him, he's just himself and you can talk to him about stuff. this weekend, he'll be gone to go to Pakistan.

yeah, i'm bored and i'm done studying for my chemistry test, so i made up a little story. any thoughts? even if you have any sudden, brilliant flash of philosophical insight into something totally different, feel free to share it.

  • is this sentence too flowery?

it's a long story but here's the sentence: Religion was still a substantial part of their lives, but they realized it was just a cornerstone in the grand arch of life.

I'm comparing and contrasting three biographies of early American life. I have a new teacher and idk if he likes metaphors or if he thinks it sounds pretentious. thnx in advance

  • hey, people. school standards question for you; kinda boring but please answer? thanks in advance:)?

Our school got a new superintendant, new principal, new classes, etc. they're not working so well, especially for me and the people in my classes last year. we were all in three or four core subjects together because of our standardized test scores and the classes were a little more extensive and interesting than our regular classes. Plus, everyone kept on track and the teacher didn't need to stop every other second to yell at us to shut our mouths. Anyway, now they've mixed up all of us, added new teachers who don't have a clue what they're doing and told teachers to dumb it down for the kids who didn't do so well on the tests last year. apparently, just being with a different group of kids will stimulate their minds. it may take a few years, but they really don't care. Btw, there's no IB program or AP classes for us this year. My dad is kind of freaking out because he's afraid we'll screw up our tests this year and be behind at the end of high school. I'm looking for a website or a tutoring system that could give me some more challenging assignments. i'm not actually that into websites. i prefer someone to whom i can ask questions and interact with to brainstorm and work. Any suggestions? btw, i know i probably sound stuck up and like one of those snobby rich kids who's afraid of not getting into Harvard but i really just want something challenging and that shows a good result at the end. Did you know that the Ivy League started as a football conference? sorry, that was random. also, do you have any idea where a sophomore-junior should be at the end of the year in all her subjects? i'm taking pre-calc, chem, Latin II, Spanish II, drivers' ed, English and health and consumer ed. next semester. like i said, thanks in advance!!

  • What's=does it mean what is/has?

I used to think that "what's" could only mean "what is". Many people use "what's" to mean "what has". Are both correct? Can "has" be shortened to just "'s". Please give me something to back up your answer so I know that you're not just making it up off the top of your head. <3<3

  • Who was the man in the children's stories...?

no, no, it's not perverted, don't get excited. It's the guy who was a worker in the mines or something and his company bought a new machine to do the work instead of the men. So this guy took up a shovel and raced the machine to see who could get the job done faster. He won, but collapsed and died of a heart attack, I think. Who was this guy? Was it a true story? I think it is. It has been driving me crazy. Charles? Henry?

  • Anybody want to try some riddles?

Ok, so since this section is riddled with jokes and almost no riddles, i decided to put a few on here.

    1. this one requires a little imagination.and some knowledge of Roman mathematics. but it's not that hard) You have a blank sheet of regular printing paper. On it are ten toothpicks in the formation of: IX=X+I, a Roman equation that doesn't make sense, right?so how can you correct it, without moving any of the toothpicks? Can you?

    2. For this one, you'll definitely need a pen and piece of paper. write down a 4 digit number, and all the digits have to be different, ok? no 2012. but 2014 is good. Then, reverse your number. You know have 2 #'s on the paper. subtract the smaller from the larger. then circle the answer to the subtraction(aka the difference). now add up each individual digit of the difference. So if you got 1234 after the subtraction, you would do 1+2+3+4=10. REMEMBER THAT #!! If you do this one, and leave your state or country, I can guess all of your #'s correctly! 25m

  • anybody wanna read my column? constuctive criticism advice please!?

War. It’s a topic that’s always close to our thoughts. For most, it’s also close to our hearts. At the same time, it’s inescapably far away. The brothers, neighbors, and nameless Americans we don’t know, are fighting in countries that most of us couldn’t locate on a blank map. And they’re not only fighting; they’re dying. The invasion that began as Operation Iraqi Freedom turned into a full-blown, fatal civil war that historians still won’t be able to understand 50 years from now.

The worst part about war is that people die. Soldiers, civilians, people with thoughts and goals and feelings just like us. Something about it seems so surreal though, like little men dying on a video game in someone’s house. But it is real. People are dying in ways that would be considered first degree murder outside of a war.

You would think that in a world as advanced as ours, we would know better. We should be able to sort it out, like a mother resolving a conflict over a toy car with her toddlers. Why is it that we feel we have to kill to get our point across? Violence isn’t allowed in school! Why should it be allowed in the grown-up world instead?

The other day, as I was riding my bike around the neighborhood, I saw a bumper sticker. It wasn’t the usual ‘Support the Troops’ but instead a heart. Half of the heart was the stripes and stars of the American flag and the other half was a camouflage pattern. The inscription above was ‘Half of my Heart is in Afghanistan”. At first I thought that the owner of the vehicle was empathetic toward the innocent civilians dying in the Middle East. Then I realized it was just another form of ‘Support the Troops’. He or she obviously had a friend or family member in Afghanistan, and was probably praying for that soldier every night. I doubt that the Iraqis and Afghans have many Americans praying for them.

Don’t misunderstand me; I would love to see all the troops home safely. But that doesn’t mean I necessarily have to agree with what they’re doing. I support the fact that they are trying to do the best for their country, but I don’t understand their reasoning. Maybe some of them don’t understand it themselves; they are just following the orders of someone whom they assume has already thought it out.

Well, I have tried to think it out, but just ended up confusing myself. What was the motive—democracy or oil? What was the result—free thinking or civil war? Or maybe I’m completely off target.

I know many people who fully support the war; I even know some people who have siblings fighting. I want to wish them the best of luck, but somehow I feel awkward. If it were up to me, I would have them all come back home. I would search the country until I found someone who understands that we don’t ever have to go so far as killing or even torture. Right now, my Spanish teacher seems a good candidate.

what are your thoughts about the ongoing war in the midle east? add facts and resources to back it up please; i don't really like conspiracy theories and hate mail to the troops or pres. candidates. i don't mind if you don't like them, just state it nicely please.

  • Clinton 08!?

why don't people like her? i think she is the best candidate this year. she knows a lot about a lot of issues, has experience, isn't prejudiced, and is a pretty good democratic candidate, pro-choice, pro-helping the environment, ... plus, she has plans for what she can do as president. so why all the bad jokes about her?

  • first sentence of a speech?

i'm in this debate about evolution/creationism and i can't come up with a good way to start. i'm not really that good in front of a big crowd, so i need a way to start that won't make me feel dumb but it gets everyone's attention. i'm debating that creationism should be taught in schools. does anyone have a good speech starter? you don't have to agree with me on creationism/evolution i just need a good way to start

  • does anybody else(not a republican!) think obama gives bad speeches?or is it just me?

everyone goes crazy about obama, but every time i listen to him, i start disliking him. i'm not sure why, but to me, hilary clinton makes a better impression in her speeches. if he's just quoted or his views are published, i think he might be the best candidate. but while listening to him, he loses my support. maybe it's just his speech writers, or maybe i need more sleep:)
