What makes a goalie tick?

All of the hubbub regarding Brodeur and an earlier question asked by Bob it got me thinking: Is it a certain mentality that makes a goaltender or is it goaltending that creates the mentality? I've heard it said that once you've gone goalie you never go back. What do you think makes these guys tick?

Update:

Bob/Bill : you guys are scaring me. The one time (ball hockey) I was in net...it felt sooo natural...lol

Update 2:

McMoose: sometimes the short straw can be a blessing in disguise

Update 3:

leafsfan: Great perspective and analogy

I'm a goaltender in an adult beer league, and by my own admission, I freely admit to being insane (as in off my rocker, not right in the head, a complete and total nutjob, a whack-job, etc.). When I skated out as a kid I didn't have that "I bet you ate paint chips as a kid" sense.

So to that, I do think that the position brings out the crazy. In my case, it certainly did.

While at the start of every season I have this "it would be fun to skate out a couple games", I say it in that sort of "I'll never do it but it sounds good" way. Sort of like when you're completely s**t-housed, and say "I'm gonna quit drinking", knowing full well you'll be getting housed tomorrow.

Here's the thing- all the crazy stuff is about getting your mind focused on stopping pucks, and getting into that zone where you're just playing and not really thinking.

I think that you gotta have a few screws loose in the head to be one, but I am one, or try to be, so I got some loose. I know when I first played goalie, it's because no one (including me) wanted to and I got the short straw. Then I fell in love with it, so I guess it's the goaltending that makes the mentallity. Or at least in my case.

    Mcmoose... I like that. Lol.

Well, Birthday Girl, I don't know what to tell ya about us goalies. I've spent thousands of dollars and I'll be damned if any professionals have figured me out or gotten through to me.

It's definitely not a job for just anyone to try.

ADD: It sounds like that chicken or the egg question. We all know that it was the goalie that came first.....not the chicken.....

Good question..........but almost like what came first, the chicken or the egg.

My guess........they were already "special" heading into it. LOL
