Why do we spend thousands of dollars a year per student on education, only to have to "help" them do the job?

My second grader came home today with math homework and I proceeded to try and "help" him with it after letting him wind down for an hour after school. I asked him to read the word problem to me and we would figure it out, of course he could not read it well enough to understand what was expected of him. I am totally confused, as his mother and I are avid readers and have read to him since birth. Also, the child has an extensive vocabulary in his daily life here at home and loves to use words that make us wonder where he learned them. When asked to spell out the words he easily does, but when asked to try and pronounce them he just freezes up and makes little or no attempt at all to do so. What are these teachers doing with our children for 7-8 hrs. a day, five days a week that leaves them so confused and scattered when they get home?

No offense, but your child could just be having trouble grasping a certain concept. It is not necessarily the teachers fault.

Besides, if you actually care about your child's learning you should be happy to help him/her understand. It's only 2nd grade, I'm sure it's not the easiest teaching job, as apposed to high school where kids brains are developed more.

It may not necessarily be the teachers. And if it does have to do with them perhaps it has to do with the way your child learns. If you taught your son by utelizing one of the three primary teaching methods and the teachers are using another, it could be keeping your son from completely understanding.

I know that this was the case for me. I was always a hands-on learner so if I was told verbally how to do something, or even if it was shown to me I never understood it until I got to do it myself.

By the way, quality education doesn't stop at the doors of the school. You are one of the most important resources he has when learning new concepts. Be patient with him and help him in any way he needs. Just don't do the work for him because that's not teaching anything but irresponsibility.

I agree with you. Just yesterday my oldest daughter found out that her 14 yr old is WAY behind the other kids in english/lang arts class, and it doesn't surprise me AT ALL that this child went thru all these years without ONE teacher saying a thing about it!

    I HATE SCHOOLS!!

Most teachers have too many students in their class to do much one-on-one work with them. I think your child is freezing because the other kids in the class make fun of him for knowing more than they do.

If you don't agree with the concepts the teachers teach, you can always call the teacher and discuss this with them and find ways to help your child suceed.

Easy: They are trying to dumb us down - make us non-critical thinkers. It's scary! It really is! They started at the college level and now are working their way to elementary school. They practically are training us to be robots so that we believe everything they say, rewrite history without us questioning them and standing against them, and bringing the govt. to a more communist state. Not as many people are able to be critical thinkers anymore because they have dumbed-down the education system so much. But I hear what you are saying - it is NOT right!

why dont you get get your teaching degree, and them you can show the teachers how its done. I'm being sarcastic by the way. Maybe your kid freezes up in front of you because he is worried about doing bad in front of you. this is very common.
