Anybody else read Tom Clancy? Does he get a lot wrong?
I'm reading Tom Clancy's "Special Forces" (one of his non-fiction titles).
I'm not involved in the Special Operations world at all, but I have friends who are; and I've already spotted a couple of factual errors.
What do you think, is it a coincidence that the couple of things I know about are the couple of things he got wrong; or is he wrong a lot?
The error that stuck out in my mind the most was the statement that the Defense Language Institute is located at the Naval Postgraduate School. They are in the same county, but not the same place.
The other error I've noticed is a comment that all Warrant Officer MOSs end in ), then a letter.
Neither of these are big errors for a fiction author, but they certainly have undermined his credibility with me on non-fiction topics.
I'm only about 1/3 of the way through the book.
I'm reading "A Guided Tour of U.S. Army Special Forces"
I've long given up on "his" fiction. All of the series are crap (entertaining, but still crap).

Those books were written a long time ago, many in the 90s. I am sure many things have changed, depending on the magnitude of the error.

In truth Tom Clancy cannot write every things he see's or knows about Special Forces. Their training, equipment, missions done, locals occupied. Also many Authors put in some bad information to produce a mental image to the public's knowledge.

The books he actualy writes himself, are pretty good.
But the net force and other series that have his name, but he doesn't actualy write,
Are full of errors,
IE: corporals in the Air Force or Navy.
So it depends on which book.
He has a Guided tour of Special Forces
And he has Black Ops series, Special Forces.
He doesn't actualy write the black ops series himself.
As to his guided tour of SF, im sure at the time he wrote it, it was as accurate as he could make it, security wise.

We both read his book and have his "Jack Ryan' Series If you don't know it consist of books like "Patriot Games", "The Sum of All Fears" , "Debt of Honor", "Executive Orders", "Without Remorse" and "Rainbow Six" If you haven't read them I highly recommend them. We also have "Into the Storm", "Armored Cav: A Guided Tour of an Armored Cavalry Regiment" and " Battle Ready".
As for the series you're reading neither of us have read so I can't comment on it specifically . But for as for the accuraccy he is usually pretty good about making sure that things are as close as he can get them without disclosing things that could put our Serice Members at risk.
