Where the heck did all the ammo go?

I can’t find any affordable ammo for my AK-47 anymore. There should be all kinds of 7.62x39mm military surplus out there in the world. Why isn't it being imported into the United States? Ammunition for all firearms is outrageously priced right now if you can even find what you are looking for at all. What the heck is going on? Is everyone just stocking up for the revolution and drying up all the supply or is the Obama Administration already passing laws that are driving up ammo prices and banning importations?

I hear ya... can't find any myself. Paranoid people just driving up the price by hording ammo. It's not like any person can run around with and AK or AR and lugg around 3,000 rounds of ammo with them. Hopefully it will get better once this president begins bringing home the troops, at least for 5.56 it will. Good luck.

The problem really started back in the 90s when Clinton banned weapons and ammo importation from China. We had an endless source of cheap ammo. Since then, Wolf brand Russian ammo has been the largest source of cheap ammo. Wolf demand has exceeded the supply for the past 3 or 4 years so it has not been entirely plentiful during this time. Price has risen from less than $2 a box of 20 to over $7 at some sources. Since the election of Obama, people have been hoarding ammo which has caused an artificial shortage. Hoarding breeds more hoarding and panic buying. Instead of people being able to buy it as they use it, they buy larger quantities in anticipation of legislation which has not happened yet. We dodged a bullet with the surplus brass issue. It really was going to be destroyed instead of being sold intact, but that has been reversed and the current channels will remain open.

    Where have you been?

Ammo began to fly off the shelves two years ago when Clinton/Obamma became front runners.

Prmers and powder have been impossible to find for more than a year.

All the stores where I live have been stripped clean since last July. Any ammo that shows up is gone in a few hours - except for the Weatherby.

The main reason - old Clinton era shipping laws on ammo, powder and primers the Bush admin ignored but were not smart enough to remove. It makes shipping this stuff impossible - at any cost - so the shippers now choose to not move it. If you want the details - read some of my other posts.

My SKS shoots the same 7.62 x 39 mm ammo as your AK-47 and I am also shocked and appalled at the high cost of ammo.

The other posters have valid points, but long before the election the prices were going up. I was told by several gun shop owners that the US Military was buying a significant amount of 7.62 x 39 to build the Iraqi Army's supplies up.

Regarding the overall price rise in ammo, I was also told back when fuel was over $4 a gallon, the prices really increased. But then they never came back down either. A good part is the fear that Obama's election has generated. Hell, I know I am nervous!!

I hope the prices come back down; not only is my SKS the funnest rifle I have ever shot, it used to be so cheap. Now I actually have to contemplate if I want to burn more ammo while shooting.

The NRA is our best hope to fight Obama's plans for gun restriction/control. The fate of our Country lies in the NRA and the support we give it!

    Source(s): Avid shooter, love the 7.62 x 39 cartridge!!

The issue is economics, there is a great demand for ammunition, however there has been no expansion of manufacturing, therefore a shortage. Law enforcement/military are at the fornt of the line for ammunition, howver they are using generally a constant ammount, especially law enforcment. As demand increses due to consumers expectations, suppliers want to wait to sell their product to get more revenue; the suppliers view it in their best intrest to wait to sell until the price is higher as Obama is doing nothing to belay the concerns of shooters that he is going to ban/restrict guns/ammunition. What is possible is that military stockpiles are dwindiling thus the want to sell surplus ammo is down, or to save costs older ammunition is being used by the militaries, instead of manufacturing new ammo. I can still find ammo, it might be a little more expensive, but it is out there

I have no idea what is going on. i have been wondering since obama was sworn in. I hope he doesnt do anything stupid. I am a hunter and a gun collector. my father has a SIG that shoots a 7.62 round. We could't find any decient priced ammo for it even on cheaperthandirt.com. Its kind of sad actually. A few years ago i could buy a box of 50 22 caliber bullets for 99 cents at Wal-Mart. Now it is $1.98 for the same brand and caliber. I guess i will have to save the ammo in my closet for when WW3 breaks out. or when obama trys to take away our guns.

God Bless America And God Bless the 2nd ammendment

obama's fault. if he wasn't so anti gun during his time as a senator, people would be mass stockpiling guns and ammo.

California still has plenty of ammo, though. don't buy it here after April 1st, the sales tax will be close to 10% (very much ridiculous). Its 7.75% in my area now.

I've been wondering would be be legal to buy a bunch of ammo from Africa or something directly? Did you know people there can get a real AK47 (assault rifle) for $25 USD? ammo's gotta be way cheaper there too. just arrange shipping and you can get like 50 cases for $1k USD. (idea from Lord of War movie)

I'm pretty sure Obama banned/is banning the sale of milsurp brass to any company who is going to reload it, and only wants it to be sold to companies who will melt it down. ONLY because it is more profitable that way, not because its an indirect way to make ammo prices go up. Sarcasm*

And yeah, we're all stocking up. Every time I go to cabela's or bass pro, I find myself leaving with at least 4-6 boxes of ammo.

i bought a m44 rifle a week ago friday, and tried to buy some rounds at the store i bought it at. they told me they had none and were having trouble keeping them as well as many other rifle and handgun ammo. i went everywhere looking for the 7.62x54r rounds with no luck. mos websites are out of stock. finally yesterday, i went to a gun show in the next town over, there was only one guy with ammo. he had both the 54r and 39, but very little of it. i bought all but 8 packs of the rounds i needed, and paid 144 bucks for 26 packs of 20, that are corrosive primed.
