Cement or brickies loam?

My hubby and i want to build a retaining wall...

we have the brickwork necessary to do it, and have dug out the trench that it's going to sit in.

Now we are hearing conflicting ways of doing the base...

Method one: use cement, and make it about 200mm deep. And then build the bricks on top of that.

Method two: just use brickies loam and build the bricks over the top of that.

I need a third opinion from someone who has built a retaining wall - which method would be more suitable and durable? Any other opinions welcome.

Cheers.

use concrete, brickies loam is ok if you are close to the water sill or get a lot of run off, but can also get washed out.

a trench at 300mm deep, and 150mm accross

filled with concrete, a 3-2-1 mix of shingle, sharp sand and cement

leave to set for a week before moving on the to wall

if your retaining wall is going to have mortared joints, pour a footer...if it is a drystack wall use the loam or crushed stone...
