mdk68gto could u elaborte on this answer?

...... "i do not find them that difficult by i do them at work also along with rebuilding them at home so i know what to expect and what to avoid. really that is not a bad price for the service, as long as labor is included. on a manual transmission there is far less to worry about with services. in an automatic, after several miles, like 75000 or more you could run into a problem if you change the fluid out at that point. in a stick not a whole lot can go wrong in that situation: .......

U said, that if he had an auto, that changing the fluid at 40,000 he could run into probs down the road. Ive never heard of that. Ive always been a stickler to change auto trans at 30,000. Im not saying ur wrong, In my Dakota owners manual, there is no reccomended interval, And could never understand why there wasnt one. But sticking to tradition I changed it anyway, at 30K intervals.

Maybe U can teach an old dog a new trick. Why would changing the fluid be a bad thing, and how could there be a potential for probs if it is changed?

ok a direct question. in an automatic, as the fluid ages it does degrade, and develops a varnishing effect. this varnish will attach to every surface that it makes contact with in the transmission. clutch packs develop a layer of material that acts as a ship decreasing end play. if you replace the fluid, because of atfs detergent ability, all surfaces in contact with that fluid will be cleaned again, potentially increasing the clutch pack end play, giving you a slipping problem. i have seen this happen in the shop a few times, and this sis why i do in fact turn down some services. just a couple of weeks ago, we had a ford come in that was slipping slightly, after changing out some very foul fluid all that truck would do was sit and rev.

in a manual there is a very different situation. all that the fluid does is lubricate and cool.a slip is due to clutch age. on a dodge i believe that the recommended mileage is either every 15,000 miles.
