REAL meaning of the Stones Paint it Black Song?

Does anyone know the absolute real meaning behind the paint it black song by the rolling stones? I am not looking for guesses but rather hard evidence with proof. I know there has to be a website or something out there telling, but all I keep finding is peoples thoughts on the meanings. According to a book I read Mick states that "Paint it black" means "Paint it black. Real helpful Mick! Lol.

Thanks.

i agree with the person above me

in my opionion at the time Paint it Black was written during an era when alot of social unrest was interupting the lives of people.

Alot of anxiety about the vietnam war and black civil rights leaders being killed and the college protesters and the police.

so it was a very depressing time despite what you hear old hippies talk about and the free love thing.

i think it was relevant to the feelings of society as a whole.

Black would blind out all the horrors from the vicarious watching vietnam on TV. Black would cover everybody so there would be no more racism.

But more than likely it is about mourning....

" I can not forsee this thing happening to you."

    and depression. thats my opionion

Well I'm a big fan of the Stones, so I don't know how much help I can be, cause your not going to get a list of somgs from me, as I see most people are giving you. As most of the songs that are given to you now are mostly of greats hits or albums just put together with some of their popular songs. So some of the songs I'd mention are from way back, and I think that is where you should start. To understand anything it's always good to start from the beginning. So here are a few albums and songs. Yes when you start back from the beginning you will see how they influences the music in a different way than the Beatles did. I used to a very long time ago play a Stones album and then a Beatles album back in the day just to see why I liked one over the other and which one was more in to a R&Bs thing. I'll start with their first album England's Newest Hit Makers The Rolling Stones: this album was the groups debut and most uncompromisingly blues/R&B - oriented full-length recording they would ever release. Mostly occupied with covers, this was as hardcore as British R&B ever got, It's raw and ready. But the Stones' succeeded in establishing themselves as creative interpreters, putting 50's and early 60's blues, rock and soul classics, sme quite obscure to white audiences, though a younger, more guitar-oriented filter. The album is highlighted with blistering versions of Route 66, Carol, the hypertempoed..I Just Want To Make Love To You, I'm A King Bee, and Walking The Dog. Their Bo Diddley-ized verson of Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away gave them their first British top ten hit. Albums you should check out.... December's Children And Everybody's Out Of Our Heads Flowers Between The Buttons 12X5 Songs: Yesterdays' Papers Complicated Something Happened To Me Yesterday All Sold Out Miss Amanda Jones My Obsession Susie Q 2120 South Michigan Avenue Under The Boardwalk Grown Up Wrong Confessin' The Blues Empty Heart Please Go Home Sittin' On A Fence Take It Or Leave It Backstreet Girl Out of Time One More Try High And Dry Hitch Hike Mercy Mercy That's How Strong My Love Is Cry To Me Memo From Turner Jiving Little Sister Downtown Susie I'm Going Down And did you know prior to the classic rock era, live album weren't common in Rock N Roll. And with the new era full live albums hit us as Got Live If You Want It! in 1966, followed in 1968 by the Kinks with Live at Kelvin Hall.......Cream: Wheels of Fire.........Ten Years After......Undead. I know I could have listed songs such as: It's Only Rock N Roll, Mixed Emotions, Satisfaction, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Under My Thumb, Ruby Tuesday, Paint It Black, Bess of Burden, Angie, Fool To Cry, Honky Tonk Women. Start Me Up, Jumpin' Jack Flast. But if I only did that then you would not know the Stones. If you start in the middle of a book you never get the real meaning behind the writer. So, sorry for the long rant, but I just had to let you know how I feel. I did not answer this question to get you to be a Stones Fan, you can do that if you want, that is if you choose to. But whether you can get ino them or not, is no concern my mine. But it's nice to see you take a look at something you did not like that much or knew to much about. So anyways good luck with your adventures into your musical travels. take care dave

Paint It Black was just going to be like a beat group number. If you'd been at the session it was like one big joke. We put Bill on piano and Bill plays in this funny style. He goes bi-jing, bi-jing, bi-jing, and all that sort of stuff and we went running about going bi-jing, bi-jing, bi-jing and that's how it all started. It was just one big joke. It was in Los Angeles. And we just stuck the sitar on because some geezer came in. He was in a jazz group playing sitar in his pyjamas. And we said Oh, that'll sound good because it's got this thing that goes "g-doing, doing, doing", etc.

    - Mick Jagger, 1966

Paint It Black was like songs for Jewish weddings at the beginning!

    - Mick Jagger, December 1992

Paint It Black is very good and very different. It has that Turkish groove that was really out of nowhere and something to do with Brian helping the song move along by playing sitar, which gave that record a particular flavour.

    - Mick Jagger, 2003

You usually don't get artists say what a song means exactly because for many artists the great thing they like about their art is how other people interpret and consume it. You won't hear Mick say something like "Oh well I was really depressed because ... so I wrote this song". That would make it personal for him but not the fans, thus making it less enjoyable.

But yeah I think the song is pretty much about depression.

It's about a man whose woman has tragically died. It may have been a car accident or a disease, but either way, it describes the man's depression. He is in mourning, nothing has color or meaning anymore. He can't even look at another woman because it makes him sick. He's let himself go physically, and other people can sense his depression. They can't look at him. In essence, the song is about a traumatic event and slipping into misery.
