People are nervous about big brother keeping a watchful eye? Why?

In a democracy, I think that people shouldn't be so concerned about who is watching what. Rather, I would be concerned about the accuracy with which the events are reported.

In modern law enforcement we are seeing more and more utilization of cameras and recording devices in public places. What are your opinions on the utilization of such reporting procedures? If you disagree with using cameras then I am curious about whether you believe it to be more efficient to protest the installation of more cameras or to protest the new laws being written into the justice system.

Update:

In response to finn mchuil:

You are correct that paranoia does have its part in the subject we are discussing. And rightly so, the justice system must apply equally to all citizens of the nation. However, due to financial uncertainty and economy, more and more reductions in law enforcement funding are being announced. Cameras and other forms of surveillance can help to bridge that gap; to bolster the spread of the law enforcement eye within our nation. One law for all people.

What happens when Comrade Obamatard and his Congress full of sycophants creates a ex post facto law making your silly walk a felony? You're screwed cause they've got hours of you on tape.

In today's USA there is so much law that it is difficult to know exactly what is illegal at any given moment, yet ignorance of the law still is no excuse. With Big Brother monitoring your every action, you better precisely know every trivial law.

Even in a democracy there is still a lack of conviction about the agenda of those who lead. I would think that it actually comes from the democratic set up. (and no I am not a socialist or a communist or anything really) What I mean is simply this, Where there exists more than one party then it will be the case that those in power may not as such represent the majority and at best couldn`t deliver the needs of all political approaches. It there for stands to reason that those who didn`t vote for any ruling party feel they need to keep a very close eye on those with power, it is an approach that does cause much paranoia. For example there was a time not in the too distant path were it appeared that the Conservative party would have been wiped out in Scotland, with very little representation.

I think cameras are a good thing, I definitely feel safer walking down the street knowing that someone somewhere is keeping an eye out. I appreciate that the camera CAN lie but in most occasions there a various positions filmed so this makes it easier to see what is actually happening.

Would the people who disagree about crimes being reported from these cameras feel the same if the crime was committed against them?

For better or worse, you should only expect privacy in your own home. When you walk out that door it is a different ball game. For the most part, I feel like the cameras protect the innocent. Although I hate it when I'm alone in an elevator picking my nose to look up and be staring straight into a camera.

The only people who would worry about cameras are the ones with something to hide. Cameras have been key to catching many criminals and I'm glad they are there.
